The 1990’s was one of the best decades for kid-friendly and hilarious Halloween movies. Some major stars like Sarah Jessica Parker and the Olsen twins starred in these films. Add in catchy Halloween tunes and enduring story lines and it is clear why these movies are so well received. These movies soon became classics and some even gained cult followings. In honor of Halloween, we give you a list of our favorite Halloween movies from the 90’s that the whole family can enjoy:
1) Hocus Pocus
Mega-stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Bette Midler fright and delight the audience in this 1993 classic. A tale of witches and reincarnation, this movie is bound to make you smile. While the witches in this movie may be scary, they are also ditsy and hilarious in their antics as they try to scare the town. Add the timeless song, “I Put A Spell on You” (which can get stuck in your head for days) and it’s clear that Hocus Pocus is definitely one of the best Halloween movies ever made.
2) Nightmare Before Christmas
The ghostly animated film that skyrocketed Tim Burton into legendary director status, Nightmare Before Christmas has an exceptionally spooky storyline. The stop-motion animation was revolutionary both technically and artistically at the time of the film’s release in 1993. A story of fantasy filled with classic musical numbers, imaginative background scenery, spooky characters and a twisted love story makes this movie a must watch with the family during Halloween or anytime during the year!
This 1998 flick is a Disney channel original movie. Perhaps one of the most underrated on the list too! Debbie Reynolds plays Aggie, an expert witch who shows up to her daughter’s house for her annual Halloween visit. Aggie’s grandchildren follow her into the magical land of Halloweentown where demons and ghouls roam the streets. Adventures ensue as Aggie tries to get her grandchildren back to the real world. This movie can still be viewed on the Disney channel every year in October.
Casper is the friendliest ghost you’ll ever know. Released in 1995 and starring Christina Ricci, Casper flew his way into the hearts of millions. This comedy, fantasy film was based on a series of comic books and animated cartoons. The movie incorporates some spooky haunted house scenes with humorous yet touching dialogue. It also teaches children some valuable lessons such as the consequences of having “unfinished business” that needs to be resolved.
5) Double, Double, Toil and Trouble
What’s not to love about the adorable Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley? Double, Double, Toil and Trouble was a made-for-television movie which became an instant classic when it was released in 1993. Mary-Kate and Ashley, twins themselves, must save their family from an evil twin who wants to wreak havoc on everyone and everything. This film is not only about witches and Halloween, it is also about finding your true identity in the world. And who can forget the antagonist’s famous last words, “I hate Halloween!”
