5 Ways to Maintain a Work-Life Balance as a Working Parent

working parents dayToday is National Working Parent Day! A day that recognizes and celebrates all the moms and dads who work hard to provide for their families. Being a working parent has become the “new normal”. The balancing act it requires can be challenging. In recognition of National Working Parent Day we share five ways for working parents to better maintain a healthy work-life balance.

1) Have a Plan and Stick with It

Planning can save enormous amounts of time and drastically reduce stress levels. Streamline daily “to-dos” for work and family with a digital calendar that syncs across devices. Don’t simply input doctors appointments and conference calls. Instead plan out as much as possible. Schedule weekly meals, family time, alone time, and the other million things that need to get done throughout the week. Try it for a week and see how much time you save. Now what will you do with all your free time?

2) Eat Breakfast as a Family

Start the day off right by sharing breakfast with your family. A healthy morning meal with those you love is the perfect way to get your day started off on the right foot. Too often we spend mornings rushing around. This increase stress levels, reduces quality time with family and sends you into the office frantic and anxiety ridden.

3) Take Advantage of Technology

In today’s world technology can be your best friend. Get organized with digital calendars, boost productivity using mobile apps, video chat and work with your team wherever you are with smart collaboration tools, take voice, fax, text, online meetings, conferencing and more with you anywhere on your smart devices, setup automatic bill pay and do your shopping online. These are just a few ways technology can help you get things done well and quickly.

4) Know When to Ask for Help

What happens when you’ve done everything you can to stay organized, spend quality time with family and you just can’t keep up? It’s time to ask for help! Everyone needs a little help now and then. Instead of risking both work and life burnout, reach out to family, friends and colleagues for help. Whether it’s someone to watch the kids, drive them to an appointment or if you’re feeling overwhelmed at work, you need to know when it’s time to ask for help.

5) Never Forget About YOU

As a working parent you have almost countless demands from work, family and friends. Each day you wake up ready to conquer the world. But, how often do you take time for yourself? “Me” time isn’t selfish. In fact, it’s the opposite of selfish. A refreshed, relaxed and happy “you” benefits everyone! You’ll have more energy to play with the kids, more patience to manage relationships, more creative juices for tackling work projects, the list goes on and on. If you hope to create the perfect work-life balance you must take time out of each day to focus on YOU.
