Millennials in the Workforce: Communications Best Practices for Millennials
Much has been made of how Millennials’ work styles clash with those of their older colleagues. As this AP feature notes, some companies are even hiring HR consultants to help their younger and older workers collaborate more effectively.
Perhaps the most important requisite for intergenerational harmony is clear communication. Anita Richards, RingCentral’s director of customer marketing, was kind enough to share the communication tips she provides to her Millennial reports. Here’s her list.
Work backwards from your result date.
When working on a project, have a target date and plan around it. Work with that end date in mind, then do what you have to do to get there.
Create project plans.
Before you get started, scope out your project: determine your milestones and figure out what hurdles you’ll have to overcome. Having a plan means you can move forward without needing to be micromanaged. More importantly, you know where you’re going and what you’re up against.
Own your projects.
Take ownership and be accountable. Your goal is to make your projects a success, not just execute them. Understand why you’re doing what you’re doing and really think things through.
Communicate and set expectations.
Manage your manager’s expectations. You may be on track and doing great on a project, but part of your job is to communicate proactively. No one works in a silo. Don’t let your manager (or others) continue to ask where a project stands.
Show your best work.
Pay attention to detail.
Notes, notes, notes.
Take notes! And keep a list of what you are doing. It’s easy to forget.
When someone asks you for something, ask why. This will help you figure out what value you can add, whether the task is worth doing and how it’s going to affect you.
