Texting for Work on the Rise Per RingCentral Survey


Nearly 80 Percent of Adults Text for Work;
More Than 60 Percent Want to Text With Their Business Numbers

San Mateo, Calif. – December 13, 2012 – Texting has become more integral to business communications based on a recent survey by RingCentral, Inc., a leading cloud business phone system provider.

RingCentral’s recent survey1 of 1,107 adults in North America shows that 873 of the respondents, 79 percent, use text messaging for business communications. Of these, 82 percent stated that they text more for business today than they did a year ago with 32 percent claiming they’ve closed a business deal via text. 

However, texting hasn’t yet reached its full potential for business. Sixty-one percent of businesses wish they could send and receive texts with their business numbers2. While 78 percent of the survey respondents wished they could text a company’s toll-free number and receive a reply. These shortcomings are greatly due to the fact that the legacy business phone systems that many businesses still use cannot support texting.

Other findings for the 873 survey respondents who text for work include:


  • 56 percent send 16 or more texts a day
  • 31 percent said that half of their daily text messages are for business
  • 91 percent send texts to colleagues
  • 71 percent send texts to customers, suppliers or partners
  • 79 percent stated that their bosses are supportive of texting for business
  • 8 have accepted a job offer via text
  • 3 percent have resigned from a job via text
