In our continuous push for user satisfaction, we are introducing a new minimum version requirement for the desktop app beginning November 15, 2024. Users will receive in-app notifications reminding them to update to the latest version if they use outdated or unsupported versions of the desktop app. This proactive measure will ensure you and your employees have access to the latest features, strongest QoS, and enhanced performance that define the RingCentral experience.

RingCentral’s new minimum version requirement: Why it matters

We want to give users the best possible experience in using the RingCentral desktop app. Frequently, this entails ensuring that users are accessing the latest version of our app that contains critical bug fixes and new features.

However, one of the challenges is that customers update to the new app version at different times, leaving us to support multiple versions in the wild. While this is an inevitable part of working with a business communication app, there are times when having users on older (or buggy!) app versions can start to cause major issues, not only for you, but your customers, too.

As we identified that many challenges and setbacks experienced by our users stem from outdated versions of the desktop app. By proactively encouraging and, in this case, requiring everyone to update, we can eliminate these roadblocks and create a more streamlined and secure environment for all.

Benefits of updating to the latest RingCentral desktop app version

  • Harness purpose built voice and video AI for maximum efficiency: Find advanced capabilities, AI automations, and enhanced customization, powered by AI technologies including natural language processing and machine learning in the latest version of the desktop app. These innovations bring intelligent features like noise reduction, live transcriptions, post-meeting insights, and more to all RingCentral users.
  • Enhanced app performance: The latest version of the desktop app provides performance enhancements to ensure a stable and crash-free experience.
  • Better usability for all: Optimize user experience through various app improvements such as enhancing the performance of window resizing and support for users with diverse visual needs.

What to expect if you’re using an older app version

Depending if your users are using the desktop app that is either outdated or unsupported, the impact and notification timeline will be different.

If the desktop app hasn’t been updated in three months, it’s considered outdated. If you haven’t updated the app for over seven months, it’s considered unsupported and you’ll be required to update to a newer version to continue accessing the desktop app. If you lose access to the desktop app, you can still use the web app, which is automatically updated to the most recent version.

For admins

A banner notification will appear in the top menu bar of the desktop app informing you when an update is available for your company. Once you see the banner, not only do you need to update your RingCentral desktop app before it becomes unsupported, but you should also install the update for your users to avoid losing access. Admins can also view reports to identify which users to update and how they should be updated.

For users

Check to determine if you can update the desktop app yourself or if you’ll need the help of your IT admin. Users who don’t require IT Admin assistance updating will begin to see notifications as soon as they are outdated. You can update by clicking “Update now” on the banner or “Check for updates” from the profile icon.

Users who require IT Admin assistance updating will begin to see notifications 15 days before they are considered unsupported. Reach out to your company IT admin as soon as possible to install the latest version of the desktop app.

3 easy steps to update the RingCentral app for your org

1. Find out what version of RingCentral you’re using

Check the App Version Report to determine which RingCentral app version and build type users in your organization are using. This will enable admins to know which users to update and how they should be updated.

🌟Tip: Admins will start seeing in-app reminders about users who are using the unsupported versions on November. We recommend updating all users to the latest version before November 15th, 2023, this will prevent in-app user notifications.

2. Update to the latest version of RingCentral

We’ve made it super simple! Just follow these easy instructions.

3. Stay on top of future updates

Once updated to the latest version, mark your calendar to repeat this on an ongoing basis

🌟 Tip: We recommend repeating 1 & 2 above every two months so your users are not using any outdated versions of the desktop app and receive notifications.
