First things first, the 919 area code and 984 area code cover the same location. They’re what’s known as overlay area codes. So, what state is area code 919 and 984?
North Carolina is the main state served by area codes 919 and 984. The geographic region they cover includes capital city Raleigh, as well as smaller cities within the Research Triangle—Chapel Hill, Durham, and Cary. As for counties, there are 14 in the area code 919 location (which is, of course, also the 984 area code location), including Wake, Johnston, Orange, and Wayne.
Originally, the whole of North Carolina was covered by area code 704, established in 1947. But in 1954, area code 919 was introduced to the state’s eastern and central cities and counties to meet demand.
In the following 47 years, the 919 code area changed regularly, with parts of it being cleaved off and given new area codes. In 2001, the overlay code 984 was first suggested to accommodate growing numbers of residents, businesses, and cell phones.
This plan was deferred for a while, but by 2011 it was clear that the 919 area did need an additional code. It was then that the 984 area code finally came into use.
Bordering area codes include 252 (Greenville, NC) and 910 (Fayetteville, NC).
