415 Area code location: Where is area code 415 located in the United States?

Let’s start with the obvious question: What state is area code 415 located in? It’s in California, covering the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

The 415 phone area code has long been associated with San Francisco, since being established back in 1947. Although a couple of bordering area codes (650 and 510) also cover parts of the Golden Gate City, it’s 415 that’s the most well-known and iconic.
As well as San Francisco and its northern suburbs, the area code 415 location includes major cities such as San Rafael, Fairfax, Sausalito, and San Anselmo. It covers parts of San Mateo and Brisbane, and spreads across Marin County and San Mateo County, too.
If you’re planning to expand your business into this region, choosing a local number allows you to become part of the community without requiring physical real estate. You can easily set up a virtual branch while keeping your HQ elsewhere—with the extra advantage of making a smaller business seem like a multi-location enterprise.
Local phone numbers also help to encourage customers and prospects to get in touch with you. And if you’re into outbound sales and marketing, remember that people are much more likely to answer the phone if the caller ID displays a local number.
So, local numbers are great. But what’s so special about the 415 area code?
The world-famous City by the Bay has a diverse population of almost 1 million, while the entire 415 area code reaches a population of 3.5 million. But aside from the potential audience for your product or service, this region has a lot of other business-friendly characteristics.
It’s known as a hub for business, tech, and innovation, being home to more than 40 Fortune 500 companies,, as well as research universities. As a gateway between America and the Pacific, the area is also ideal for international trade. But the entrepreneurial culture also lends itself to smaller businesses and startups.

Tourists also flock to San Francisco’s landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. It’s a historic city, founded in 1776. And so iconic is the 415 area code that many former San Francisco residents request to keep their phone numbers as a reminder.

History of the 415 area code

The 415 area code has a long and intriguing history. It was one of the original 86 North American area codes assigned in 1947, and one of three original prefixes covering the state of California.
Back then, area code 415 covered a wide swathe of central Cali, from Sacramento down to Bakersfield. But, due to rapid economic growth and the demand for phone numbers, the area proved too big for just one code.

The region initially covered by area code 415 has been divided on three occasions. Oakland and the East Bay, for example, was given its own area code (510) in 1991. The most recent change, though, came in 2015, when an overlay number was added to 415.

The 628 overlay is assigned to all new numbers, with existing 415 area code customers allowed to keep their numbers. Now, when you make calls to a 415 or 628 prefix, you have to dial 1 + area code + 7-digit telephone number. But you still pay the local rate.

415 Area code ZIP codes

The large zone covered by area code 415 contains a range of zip codes. They all start with either 941, 946, or 949.

415 Area code time zone

Area code 415 is in the Pacific time zone (PT), which is GMT -8 (or GMT -7 during Daylight Saving Time).

This is crucial to keep in mind if your business isn’t based in California but does want to reach customers there. Don’t call your San Fran clients in the early hours by mistake!
