What is Giving Tuesday?
GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past eight years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

Traditionally, Giving Tuesday supported generosity in the form of charitable donations and giving. This year, though, we’re encouraging our employees to show their generosity in a variety of ways during GivingTuesday–whether it’s cleaning up a nearby park or beach, helping a neighbor, donating to a holiday wishlist for foster youth, advocating for an issue, or giving to causes; every act of generosity counts.
Although it’s been a challenging year, RingCentral employees have continued to give back and support local and global communities. In fact, thanks to virtual volunteering opportunities and added flexibility with supporting nonprofits, our volunteering hours have increased by over 500% from last year.
For example, Michael Adams, a RingCentral employee in Denver, has volunteered over 150 hours this year with Hope Starts Here Food Bank. “To me, volunteerism is simply putting your time and energy towards something you believe in.”, Michael says.
We’re also thrilled to be lifting our annual donation matching cap to celebrate Giving Tuesday and help our employees support their favorite nonprofits. For employees who have already reached their donation matching cap, this is a great opportunity to celebrate the generosity of the holiday.
How can companies engage?
Companies can participate in Giving Tuesday and encourage employees to give back to their communities through flexible and impactful programs and benefits. COVID-19 has put limitations on many in-person volunteering and community building opportunities, but it’s also allowed programs to shift and engage employees in other ways. No matter what an employee’s “day job” is, they should find it easy to get engaged and connected with their community.
- Dollars for Doers: Support the causes your employees care most about. By offering Dollars for Doers Grants, companies can provide grants to nonprofits where their employees regularly volunteer.
- Volunteer Time Off: VTO is an excellent way to embrace both work-life balance and community impact to give employees the time they deserve and connect with causes they love.
- Donation Matching: Offer 1:1 donation matching as well as special giving campaigns throughout the year.
