Animal Wise Radio lowers costs, increases its efficiency and connects better with its listeners using RingCentral’s voicemail to email feature.
Michael Fry had no idea his work with Animal Ark, a “happy, pet-friendly shelter” in Hastings, Minnesota, would make him a radio personality with a nationally syndicated animal radio show, Animal Wise Radio. But one good thing led to another.
“We got into radio,” Michael explains, “because KDWA radio in Hastings called us up and asked if we had ever thought of doing radio about animals. We launched February two years ago and it’s been growing like gangbusters. It now reaches a little over two million listeners every week. We are in virtually all the major markets in the United States.”
The show covers things from how to house-train your cat to global warming. “It’s really about humans and their relationship to their world around them,” he says. “We have guests from all over the world and we like to give listeners an opportunity to comment or contribute.
“We were looking to get voicemail that could be easily converted into .mp3 or .wav files so that people could leave messages for us which we would easily use on our radio show.” And, since they are a small operation, they needed it to be very simple, easy and inexpensive.
He called his phone providers to see if anyone had such a service “and much to my surprise,” he said, “none of them offered that. In the 21st century, that was a little surprising to me. So I

searched the internet. I figured somebody had to have that
service.” He found RingCentral.
Now, he says, “RingCentral delivers a .wav file that we can instantly throw into our editing software to make the audio files for our show. And with the cost of your service, if we take one listener phone call per month, we’ve more than paid for the service, considering the cost of getting that voicemail recording converted to .mp3 for use on the show.” Once listeners leave a message, “We literally drag and drop the message from the email to our editing software. It is easier than you can imagine!”
"RingCentral provides us with a very inexpensive and seamless way of interacting with listeners all across the country," Mike concludes.
Like many RingCentral users, Michael came to RingCentral for one feature and found a goldmine, another instance in his life where one good thing led to another. “I was surprised after I signed up to see that there is so much there,” he says. “We will be using more of the service in the future. Because our radio staff works in a very disparate way, we’re not in the office together, we don’t have landlines and most of us just have cell phones and PDAs and so it provides us a way of having a main number to call for the radio show and we’re looking at all sorts of possibilities of what we can do with it.”
With RingCentral an integral part of its operations, Animal Wise Radio will continue to “grow like gangbusters” in the future.
