Our partnership with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/career-services\/fellowships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiring Our Heroes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gives us the chance to offer transitioning U.S. Service Members training and experience. We sat down with several of our fellows to hear some valuable tips for overcoming their most pivotal career move.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Start Early.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One key piece of advice our Veterans shared is to start the transition to a civilian career early. The process begins as soon as you\u2019ve made the decision to retire from service. That\u2019s the time to begin researching fields of interest and aligning career goals with your<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resume<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">education, and credentials. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associate Solutions Engineer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pierre Cress leveraged his twenty-year Air Force career in avionics to pivot into communications technology by accessing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/career-services\/fellowships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiring Our Heroes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> early on while still serving in the military.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cA <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">program like this RingCentral fellowship allows you to gain more experience,\u201d Cress noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Enterprise Engineer Brandon Hewett tells us, \u201cResilience, communication, and technical skills from the military prepare us for success in technology careers.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, despite years of military experience, some fields require additional credentials or education. Military transition aid programs offer free education and technical certifications to fill that gap, so inquire about those early on. Associate Solutions Engineer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kolin Brooks recommends contacting ACT (Army Career Tracker), which provides a free <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coursera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> account allowing members to take Google IT classes, IBM Cybersecurity courses, and more. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boots2books.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boots to Books<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another organization providing education and career resources to those who have served.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Resumes Land Interviews.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RingCentral\u2019s Trevin Murray spent thirty years in the Air Force most recently as Commander of a Cybersecurity Unit. He now wears two hats, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Program Director for Security and Trust along with Chief of Staff for the Chief Information Security Officer. Murray admits, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t always know how our military experience translates to civilian careers.\u201d Tailoring your resume to the role will help get the attention of employers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Professional resume writers or using an effective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tealhq.com\/tools\/resume-builder\">resume maker<\/a> can be helpful in translating a military resume into language that civilian employers understand, ensuring your unique skills and experience stand out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your resume will get you an interview, but it\u2019s your experience and interview skills that will land the job. Ultimately, Murray emphasizes, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have leadership experiences and vast other work experience. We are teachable, we are trainable, we are dedicated, and we get the job done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Network. Network. Network.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Networking is key for easing the transition and it will help you level up your civilian career. Abby Hyde, Co-Lead for RingCentral\u2019s U.S.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Service Members employee resource group and University Recruitment &amp; DEI Manager <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggests <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connecting with local Veteran groups in your area and LinkedIn groups:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/fourblock\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FourBlock<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Helping Veterans transition better<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/veterati\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterati<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Mentoring network for the military<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/vets2industry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vets2Industry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Focused on providing knowledge, connections and opportunities for your transition<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RingCentral\u2019s Manager of Account Enrichment Alex Taus suggests, \u201cFind or create a Veteran&#8217;s support group wherever you get hired. These groups offer a little slice of \u2018home\u2019 in the free world.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Maintain Structure.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest hurdles some of our service members reported is overcoming the loss of the military regimen and structure. Taus explains, \u201cHave a support system in place. The mental aspect of transitioning from extreme structure and discipline can often cause emotional responses and anger. Take this seriously and make sure you have a healthy outlet that retains some of that structure and discipline (ie. martial arts, recreational sports, etc.)\u201d Associate Solutions Engineer Christopher Abdulla reminds U.S. Service Members to \u201cprioritize yourself and your family during the transition.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Some Final Advice.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBe patient with yourself. This transition will take time,\u201d says Hyde.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdulla adds, \u201cDon\u2019t EVER think you&#8217;re alone.
