{"id":53367,"date":"2022-10-04T12:22:18","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T19:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newrcblog.wpengine.com\/us\/en\/blog\/?p=53367"},"modified":"2025-03-13T06:38:08","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T13:38:08","slug":"sharing-power-creating-opportunities-for-hispanic-women-in-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/us\/en\/blog\/sharing-power-creating-opportunities-for-hispanic-women-in-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharing power: Creating opportunities for Hispanic women in technology."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlights:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfwatw.org\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DFW Alliance of Technology and Women<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DFW*ATW) is a vital non-profit organization committed to increasing the number of women in leadership and strengthening the pipeline of girls entering technology fields.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee Resource Groups like HOLA help provide the community\u00a0and networking opportunities Latinas\u00a0need to thrive, innovate and lead at RingCentral.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>A rising tide<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2002, a group of women working at Texas Instruments formed a support group to help each other navigate the traditionally male semiconductor industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, that support group has grown into a nonprofit network with 400+ members, all actively advocating for women and girls and helping them succeed in technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Filling the pipeline<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Enterprise Account Executive, Marla Ravkind, being involved with DFW*ATW is a chance to focus on building a pipeline of women. \u201cIf we want to address the disparity of women in the technology workforce, we have to say to ourselves, \u201cWhere does this begin?\u201d And the truth is, it begins in grade school. We build out groups and do a lot of fun, STEM-related activities, and once we get them interested, we encourage them and connect them to programs that can develop their specific interests.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Igniting excellence<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expertise in navigating the technology industry is a game-changer for students, as they can be guided into specific areas that are not only interesting, but positioned for growth. That\u2019s where DFW*ATW\u2019s \u201cIgnite\u201d program plays a role. \u201cIgnite is our most popular program,\u201d says Ravkind. \u201cSince COVID, we have a lot of women and mothers that had to pause their career and are ready to get back into the workforce. We help them upskill with certifications like AWS (Amazon Web Services) or (Microsoft) Azure. We build out the curriculum, in partnership with AWS and Azure, and hire the trainers to get them certified.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Following through<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training is good. Connections are better. That\u2019s why Ravkind and DFW*ATW don\u2019t stop with certifications. \u201cWe\u2019ve even built a job portal called Employer Connect, where we are able to connect women with organizations like RingCentral, CapitalOne, Accenture and Salesforce. We track their progress, see who\u2019s been hired where, and serve as ambassadors for these women &#8211; sharing their accomplishments and making sure they\u2019re noticed for their achievements. Now, we just need to see more women in the C-suite. We\u2019re laying the groundwork for that right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Diverse excellence<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis year, we\u2019re really focused on aligning our priorities withHispanic and African-American ERGs as well as other organizations that promote diversity,\u201d says Ravkind. \u201cWe&#8217;re pushing that initiative forward to say: \u201cHey, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the communities that we should go into for these young girls to get them interested in STEM. e\u2019re shining a light on these opportunities for kids whose schools truly don&#8217;t have the resources and I can tell you this past year, it\u2019s making a difference. We pay close attention to our demographics, and interest is growing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Hispanic women and girls.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Setting an example<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID took a lot of women out of the workforce, which makes now a critical time to blaze a trail for others. \u201cWhen young Hispanic women and girls see someone as inspirational as (Pinnacle Group CEO) Nina Vaca, they say, \u201cWow, she looks like me, she talks like me, she grew up like me,\u201d and that\u2019s a big deal.\u00a0 By sharing the stories of more Hispanic women, it makes it easier for the next generation &#8211; they don\u2019t have to feel like outsiders, or like they don\u2019t belong. It tells them: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there&#8217;s an opportunity here for me too<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Lighting the path to success.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can RingCentral let Hispanic women know there\u2019s opportunity for them here? Ravkind says we have to continue creating an inclusive environment &#8211; and making sure Hispanic women are aware of the opportunities available. \u201cPeople want to come to an organization where they are going to feel supported, and feel like there is an opportunity for growth. Women want to be put in a position where they can and will be successful. Having leadership that is invested in your success is key! We need to be intentional about recruiting and share success stories with candidates.
