{"id":52612,"date":"2022-07-05T07:39:25","date_gmt":"2022-07-05T14:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newrcblog.wpengine.com\/us\/en\/blog\/?p=52612"},"modified":"2025-03-13T06:38:27","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T13:38:27","slug":"powering-your-next-career-pivot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/us\/en\/blog\/powering-your-next-career-pivot\/","title":{"rendered":"Powering your next career pivot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlights:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90607167\/is-now-a-good-time-to-change-careers-more-workers-are-feeling-good-about-it\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\u00a0recent Fast Company poll<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows\u00a052% of U.S. employees are considering making a career change this year.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/tenure.nr0.htm\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in 2020, workers aged 35-44 had been with their current employer for 4.9 years, while workers aged 45-54 averaged 7.5 years<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52613\" style=\"width: 180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52613\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Kelly-malone.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kelly Malone<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May 2022, Director of Application Security and Customer Trust <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/from-the-great-resignation-to-the-great-reset-top-takeaways-from-women-of-silicon-valley\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelly Malone led a workshop at the Women of Silicon Valley Conference <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on navigating a career pivot using transferable skills. The workshop was for women interested in creating a new career path, the mentors and sponsors of those looking for a career change, or those rejoining the workforce after a career break. There was lively discussion throughout the workshop, encompassing over 40 participants spanning various industries. We recently interviewed Kelly to hear her personal story and get some advice on making successful career transitions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Build that network<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Kelly\u2019s career began in chemistry, her first pivot was into microelectronics where she earned multiple patents. When she noticed that the microelectronics industry was slowing, she decided to pivot to security. Reaching out to a colleague was key. Her colleague helped her pinpoint the skills she could highlight and transfer to the security field. \u201cThis is why it\u2019s good to have a network.\u201d She wound up in a program for women in technical positions who were looking to transition to new roles within her company. Kelly recommends finding a mentor as part of your network. While change isn\u2019t always easy, networking can help point you to new opportunities &#8211; family members, friends, or professional websites like LinkedIn are a great place to start.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Transferable skills are the way to go<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery move I\u2019ve made, I\u2019ve prepared myself for. Prepare yourself with transferable skills.\u00a0 Building additional skills will help you become a subject matter expert.\u201d Kelly took courses in Security Architecture and attended a bootcamp as a bridge to deepen her understanding of the new field she was pursuing. This led her to a project in Dubai with a major power company and several others that followed as she became an expert in her new field of critical infrastructure security. What followed was a surprise. Another industry colleague tapped Kelly to head up a penetration testing program based on her manufacturing methodology expertise in microelectronics. Transferable skills are empowering because they build competency and lead to future projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Make experience count<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a plan helped Kelly\u2019s career and it can help yours. She built a network, focused on transferable skills, then leveraged her experience. Leveraging her microelectronics background, Kelly pioneered and implemented a data breach testing program that eventually led her to RingCentral. \u201cThat is what I\u2019m doing now, running RingCentral\u2019s penetration testing program. Those skills that I developed, that network that I had developed, it all led to where I am right now.\u201d There is no magic and there was lots of rejection along the way, but Kelly wants you to know that if you continue to grow professionally, there will come a time when your specific set of skills matches what a company needs. Leveraging past experience while utilizing your network and transferable skills is a plan that will result in greater achievements.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Tighten your pivot radius<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RingCentral is a great workplace to make a pivot.
