{"id":52323,"date":"2022-06-09T09:24:38","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T16:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newrcblog.wpengine.com\/us\/en\/blog\/?p=52323"},"modified":"2025-03-13T06:38:34","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T13:38:34","slug":"showing-up-aiming-higher-pride-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/us\/en\/blog\/showing-up-aiming-higher-pride-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Showing up, aiming higher."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlights:<\/span><i><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A workplace \u201cally\u201d is someone who uses their power and privilege to advocate for others.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allies show up\u00a0for under-represented, marginalized groups\u00a0that they do not\u00a0personally\u00a0identify\u00a0with.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vast majority of us believe in diversity, tolerance and social justice. But it\u2019s a lot easier to feel like an ally than it is to be one. For Manila-based Regional Vice President for Small Business Expansion Tin Tripoli-Ordenes, allyship is an ongoing calling\u00a0 &#8211; with its own set of rewards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Starting with a safe space<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For me, leadership starts with providing a safe space,\u201d says Tin. \u201cIt\u2019s about seeing what might be a marginalized group of people and stepping up to ensure they have a level of comfort that allows them to be their best and truest selves. Plain and simple, it&#8217;s you, providing the same levels of respect and comfort you would like to have for yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Choosing responsibility<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI see (allyship) as a responsibility, if that\u2019s the right word,\u201d says Tin.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a choice we make &#8211; to decide to be accountable for the ways a certain group treats a certain marginalized community.\u201d In the Philippines, that simple choice is often anything but simple. \u201cThis is a very religious, patriarchal, traditional society,\u201d says Tin, \u201cand it\u2019s easy to encounter discrimination against people and ideas that are not necessarily considered \u201cnormal.\u201d\u00a0 So when I encounter inequality, I take it upon myself to bear that moral responsibility and show up for what&#8217;s right for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everyone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Fall down. Get up. Repeat.\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allyship is a journey, and one that is, frankly, easy to mess up. Sometimes allies overdo it. Sometimes they don\u2019t show up when they\u2019re needed most. For Tin, the two most important things are to listen, and never give up. \u201cI have a lot of friends across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, and they have been very generous in educating me about how to navigate relationships, preferences, expressions\u2026just why things are hurtful, or important, or even uplifting. It\u2019s all about listening. I just think the very least we can do is really listen, be respectful and provide everyone an opportunity to be judged based on their merits\u2014their kindness, their skills, their entirety as a person instead of just looking at one\u2019s gender preferences or orientation, and so I think that&#8217;s how I&#8217;ve always done it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>How to think about allyship<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allyship is not about helping marginalized groups, it is about <\/span><b>partnering<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allyship is <\/span><b>not an identity, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is the consistent commitment to learning about power structures and systemic oppression that affect marginalized groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allyship is not proud,<\/span><b> it is always open<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to being corrected by those with whom you seek to be an ally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allyship does not represent marginalized groups, <\/span><b>it acts in solidarity with them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Big strides, small steps<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allyship is about people outside a marginalized group taking concrete steps to recognize bias\u00a0 and reverse it. It\u2019s a concerted, multifaceted effort that includes not only building a safe work environment with systems and processes in place that mitigate biases, but also starting it from recruitment, and sustaining it in organizational development initiatives. But progress sometimes starts smaller.\u00a0 \u201cI think RingCentral, particularly here in Manila, has made great strides,\u201d says Tin, \u201ceven if they seem like small steps\u2014like the recent revision of our email signatures. You get to choose your pronouns, right? Simple things like that are the first steps toward building a system of consciousness, then education, then, hopefully, acceptance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Reaping the rewards<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know diverse, inclusive companies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/future-business.org\/the-business-benefits-of-diversity-equality-and-inclusion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For Tin , the benefits of allyship are more personal and immediate. \u201cI&#8217;ve always admired the LGBTQ+ community for their boldness, their creativity, and courage. It\u2019s inspiring to me, and\u00a0 I get a lot from these relationships;\u00a0 from fun to creativity to inspiration.
