But unfortunately, they often feel pressured to put their ambition aside for caretaking responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And although we\u2019ve seen some improvement in this area, progress is never linear. According to a recent<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/success.qualtrics.com\/rs\/542-FMF-412\/images\/Qualtrics%20-%202022%20Employee%20Experience%20Trends%20Report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qualtrics report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in 2021, <\/span><b>71%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women intended to stay on with their employer. In 2022,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/bizwomen\/news\/latest-news\/2021\/11\/2022-could-bring-more-turnover.html?page=all#:~:text=Overall%2C%2071%25%20of%20women%20intended%20to%20stay%20with%20their%20employer%20this%20year.%20Looking%20to%202022%2C%20that%E2%80%99s%20dropped%20to%2063%25%2C%20the%20lowest%20among%20women%20or%20men%20at%20various%20levels.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this figure has dropped to <\/span><b>63%<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Further,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockefellerfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Women-in-Leadership-Why-It-Matters.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women only hold <\/span><b>4%<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of leadership roles at Fortune 500 companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/AuEKTqUjj6KjBeOGs5\" width=\"700\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-presentation\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><br \/>\n<em>Image source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/olympicchannel-chloe-kim-AuEKTqUjj6KjBeOGs5\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional female athletes face many of the same roadblocks<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/the-warrior-in-us-all-what-working-women-can-learn-from-female-athletes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that women in business have<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Yes, women represent<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/onherturf.nbcsports.com\/2021\/10\/28\/2022-beijing-winter-olympics-storylines\/#:~:text=Over%2045%20percent%20of%20the%20athletes%20at%20the%202022%20Beijing%20Winter%20Olympics%20will%20be%20women%2C%20a%20record%20for%20the%20Winter%20Olympic%20Games.%20At%20the%202018%20PyeongChang%20Winter%20Olympics%2C%20women%20comprised%2041%20percent%20of%20competitors.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than <\/span><b>45%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the athletes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Beijing this year\u2014a record for the Winter Games. But female athletes are still largely overworked and underrepresented. And they\u2019re ready to do something about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking for some inspiration as a business professional, take a note from these world-class 2022 Winter Games athletes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><a id=\"take\"><\/a>Take care of your mental health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizations are starting to realize that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unum.com\/employers\/hr-trends\/guides-reports\/mental-health-in-the-workplace\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t just a nice-to-have benefit\u2014it has a clear ROI. According to benefits group Unum, employees who feel less stress and anxiety are more likely to stay at a company and are often more focused and productive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the workplace, female leaders\u2019 mental health has taken a hit, thanks to COVID-19.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/success.qualtrics.com\/rs\/542-FMF-412\/images\/Qualtrics%20-%202022%20Employee%20Experience%20Trends%20Report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qualtrics data shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they\u2019re the most likely to resign from their positions due to added pressure. Mothers and Black women are also especially at risk, as the pandemic has had a disproportionate \u201cburnout\u201d<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/women-in-the-workplace#:~:text=The%20events%20of%202020%20have,painstaking%20progress%20toward%20gender%20diversity.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effect on these groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter Games athletes\u2014<\/span><b>alpine skier<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/us-ski-and-snowboard\/athletes\/mikaela-shiffrin\"><b>Mikaela Shiffrin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>snowboarder<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/us-ski-and-snowboard\/athletes\/Chloe-Kim\"><b>Chloe Kim<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014understand these mental health struggles well. To many\u2019s surprise, the four-time world champion fell victim to pressure as she missed a gate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mikaela-shiffrin-crashes-out-of-second-straight-race-at-beijing-olympics-022558799.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the slalom leaving her disqualified from the event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Wednesday.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Shiffrin and Kim have learned through experience that to perform well, their mental health needs to take first priority. Kim recently told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magazine, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OjPFGsayd2g\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve been more open about speaking on the topic of mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2026 because I really felt that affect me. Managers need to create a culture where vulnerability is not only accepted but encouraged. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They need to model mentally healthy behaviors\u2014like making sure to take time for self-care and mindfulness\u2014and facilitate a connection among employees. Regular check-ins with direct reports are a great way to start to shift company attitudes toward prioritizing mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><a id=\"use\"><\/a>Use your position to speak out about important topics<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a time of global and political unrest,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/5-examples-of-powerhouse-women-pushing-back-in-business-and-athletics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it can be difficult to speak your truth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014particularly in a workplace setting. However, it\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appropriate to stand up for what\u2019s right and, as a professional, speak up for those who aren\u2019t able to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond being appropriate, this openness is good for the workplace. If employees feel comfortable sharing their opinions, they\u2019re likely to trust leadership\u2014and that confidence translates to productivity. Neuroeconomist Paul J. Zak found that high-trust companies saw<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/01\/the-neuroscience-of-trust\"><b>76%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more employee engagement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than low-trust companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling unsure about being open at work? The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Business Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests creating an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/03\/how-to-speak-up-when-it-matters\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cif-then\u201d plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I see this, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I\u2019ll do that.\u201d You identify situations in which you would need to speak up and then come up with strategic responses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><a id=\"choose\"><\/a>Choose your family <\/b><b><i>and<\/i><\/b><b> your career (or don\u2019t\u2014it\u2019s up to you)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the pandemic, many female professionals have been forced to juggle their careers with familial duties. They\u2019re struggling with burnout, shifting expectations, and demands from both work and home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, men with families rarely have to choose one or the other. You can be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a parent <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a business professional\u2014or top athlete in the world\u2014without constantly explaining how you \u201cdo it all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Winter Games\u2019 <\/span><b>bobsledder <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/usa-bobsled-skeleton-federation\/athletes\/Elana-Meyers-Taylor\"><b>Elana Meyers Taylor<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t let the naysayers bring her down. She\u2019s tied for most-decorated female athlete in Winter Games history, and she\u2019s married to a fellow bobsledder, Nic Taylor. They had a son, Nico, in February of 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"quote-text-break-point-large\">\n<p class=\"quote-text\">&#8220;It\u2019s been quite an adventure the whole time. Figuring out how to train, how to breastfeed, how to do all these different things, how to travel around the world.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"quote-text-author\">Elana Meyers Taylor, Winter Games 2022 bobsledder<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The closer society gets to gender parity and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> equality, the less frequently women will have to answer these stereotypical questions. Stanford-based family researchers Carolyn and Phil Cowan have coined a term that they believe explains this type of societal inequality: \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5589770\/parenting-working-women-domestic-balance\/#:~:text=The%20Cowans%20call%20this%20phenomenon%20%E2%80%9Cunentitlement.%E2%80%9D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unentitlement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A majority of women don\u2019t feel entitled to put their own needs or ambitions ahead of their male partners\u2019, and\u2014perhaps subconsciously\u2014feel the need to do most of the caregiving work solely on the basis of sex. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical psychologist<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5589770\/parenting-working-women-domestic-balance\/#:~:text=The%20couples%20who,down%20to%20recalibrate.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darcy Lockman has found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that couples who distribute the workload evenly have actively decided together that if one or the other feels overwhelmed, they sit down and recalibrate. Their ultimate goal is to be equal partners in the relationship. <strong>More women in business\u2014or women, in general\u2014should insist on this type of equality<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><a id=\"balance\"><\/a>Balance: It\u2019s not just for beams anymore<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2020 Summer Games in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokyo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were credited as \u201cthe first gender-equal Games,\u201d with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/531146\/women-participants-in-olympic-summer-games\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women representing <\/span><b>48.7%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of competitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But equality isn\u2019t the same as equity. Even with an \u201cequal\u201d number of female and male athletes, systemic sexism still persists in professional sports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same is true in the business world. And while we can\u2019t eliminate sexism overnight, we can keep working toward gender equality\u2014with the Winter Games\u2019 female athletes as our inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these women are balancing more than just their athletic performance on their shoulders\u2014they\u2019re caregivers too. We can relate to them there.
