Curbside pickup opportunities proliferated during the pandemic, as general merchandise retailers, supermarkets, restaurants, and others wanted to attract customers who preferred a contact-free option. Many of the retailers that introduced this feature are likely to maintain it into 2022 and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wal-Mart expanded its online order with curbside pickup options and continues to promote this opportunity to customers. Many other retailers have done the same. In addition to the convenience and no-contact benefits, curbside pickup helps reduce some in-store congestion in high-volume stores during busy shopping times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50621\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/retail-2022.png\" alt=\"RingCentral for Retail\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1068\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b><a id=\"worker-engagement-retention\"><\/a>3. Retailers will focus on worker engagement and retention<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dubbed \u201cThe Great Resignation,\u201d the mass exodus of workers from the job market was a striking pandemic impact in 2021 as record numbers of employees walked away from jobs month after month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employers are experiencing a perfect storm of challenges in recruiting and retaining employees. Those challenges include an incredibly high \u2018quit rate\u2019, and a corresponding increase in wages as employers attempt to hang on to the workers they have, and healthy job creation spurred by federal money pouring in to prop up the economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josh Bersin, a global research analyst and expert in human resources management, recently noted: \u201cThe Quit Rate, the number of people who voluntarily leave positions, is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2021\/quits-rate-6-6-percent-in-accommodation-and-food-services-in-september-2021.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now 3.4%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2021\/quits-rate-of-2-9-percent-in-august-2021-an-all-time-high.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.4 million last month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), by far the highest we\u2019ve ever seen. In the middle of all these job openings, almost a third of Americans will voluntarily change jobs this year\u2026 So, think about the numbers. One in ten (16 million) jobs open, over 4 million people leaving their jobs each month, and wages increasing at the highest rate ever. This is a crazy job market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retail has been greatly impacted by the worker exodus. For example, in August of 2021,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/11\/04\/best-workplaces-retail-dicks-sporting-goods-abercrombie-fitch-bombas-great-resignation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 721,000 retail workers gave their notice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, average wages have risen 4.2 percent, but for the retail sector, that number jumps to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-wages-salaries-increase-8ce98ea3bcc14c4810eb5a1111e1df49\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 5.9 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the coming year, retailers will focus their attention on boosting their worker engagement and retention efforts. In addition to offering more competitive wages, retailers will need to invest in better training and better communication to keep their workers engaged and happy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><a id=\"ai\"><\/a>4. AI-enabled processes will continue to evolve<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as retailers struggle with worker retention, the retail sector is looking to AI to solve some of its challenges. AI enables retailers to deliver personalized experiences to consumers at a much lower cost. Online retailers use AI-enabled chatbots to answer common questions from customers and to help guide them through the website. AI is a first line of defense in chat support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI can also increase efficiency in operational areas. For example, AI is being tapped to streamline such processes as inventory management and logistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"rc-post-content-cta
