{"id":50567,"date":"2022-01-14T11:09:12","date_gmt":"2022-01-14T19:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"\/us\/en\/blog\/?p=50567"},"modified":"2025-03-13T06:39:05","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T13:39:05","slug":"audacious-imagination-mlk-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/us\/en\/blog\/audacious-imagination-mlk-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Audacious Imagination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlights:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danita Oliver is RingCentral\u2019s Senior Global Diversity, Equity &amp; Inclusion Leader<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a paid holiday for RingCentral employees in North America<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The past two years have been pivotal for many reasons\u2014mainly due to\u00a0 the convergence of a relentless pandemic with economic unrest and the never-ending fight for social and racial justice for people everywhere.\u00a0 In this time, we\u2019ve seen Black people murdered on camera, but we\u2019ve also seen juries convict their murderers &#8211; even the ones who carried badges. We\u2019ve seen Black women elected to public office, and named as heads of major corporations. Is this progress? I\u2019d argue that it\u2019s a start. I\u2019d also argue we have quite a long way to go.\u00a0 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is traditionally a day to celebrate our shared journey toward a more just, humane, equitable and peaceful world. This year, I\u2019m realizing it\u2019s also a day to listen to the people who\u2019ve led the journey this far &#8211; and to the people who will take the next steps. I sat down with Black employees and allies\u00a0 &#8211; all from different generations\u00a0 &#8211; to get their perspectives on where we are now, where we should be, and how we\u2019ll get there.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50570\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50570\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-50570\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Edward-Odom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"208\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50570\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edward Odom, Senior Solutions Engineer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Young Lions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a new generation takes on the challenges of social and racial justice, new technologies (like ours) provide everyone a louder megaphone. The younger generation is employing these tools to educate, organize and fundraise with great effect\u2014 and those who came before are taking notice.\u00a0 \u201cI love the courage they consistently display, and their willingness and ability to inspire one another,\u201d says Professional Services team member Ivan Jones. \u201cThis generation is not satisfied with blending in. They see\u2026and fight to be seen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior Solutions Engineer Edward Odom recognizes this generation\u2019s fire as well &#8211; but also the similarities with Dr. King\u2019s style. \u201cMy generation is all about give and take. Today\u2019s generation doesn\u2019t capitulate easily, and I think that there is value in that. Dr. King didn&#8217;t sugar coat things either. He reminded America of who we were, and are. Any therapist will tell you that the first step towards change is self-evaluation and being brutally honest about that. Today\u2019s generation excels at that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Radical vs. Resolute\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50569\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-50569\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Gina.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"208\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gina Miller, Customer Advocacy Manager<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a system seems so obviously rigged, why would the people it\u2019s rigged against choose to work within it? Or is that the slow-but-sure way to justice? For Senior Customer Advocacy Manager Gina Miller\u2019s generation, recent events have been hard to watch, but impossible to ignore. \u201cWe\u2019ve started hearing the term \u201cracial reckoning,\u201d and of course, that gives the optimist in me hope\u2014maybe the images of George Floyd being murdered finally made injustice impossible to ignore. But that\u2019s not what we\u2019ve seen. Instead of a racial reckoning, we\u2019ve seen ongoing brutality; we\u2019ve seen pleas for equality misconstrued as anti-whiteness, characterized as inherently violent and used to criminalize protest. We\u2019ve seen voting rights systematically stripped away. We\u2019ve seen vehement opposition to education about slavery and its long shadow, because, it\u2019s supposedly the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teaching of history<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not the atrocity of racism, that\u2019s the problem.\u00a0 And this has all happened while a pandemic swept through our country and disproportionately impacted Black Americans.\u00a0 Statistics regarding the jobless, the homeless, the hungry, the sick and the dead show us plainly &#8211; there are historic injustices and structural racism that we, as a society, must acknowledge and dismantle.\u00a0 (MLK Day) is just another reminder &#8211; the time for racial reckoning, and more importantly, true transformation, is now.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Odom agrees about the need for radical change, but takes a longer view of the process. \u201c(My generation\u2019s approach) isn\u2019t what this generation would call \u201cradical.\u201d It is methodical. We need to change laws, and that takes process. We must remain radical in our thinking but steady in the work.\u201d\u00a0 Jones concurs: \u201cRadical change <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possible. It just isn\u2019t always rapid.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Less Asking. More Action.<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50568\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50568\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-50568\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Ivan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"208\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ivan Jones, Professional Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. King believed \u201ca threat to justice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.\u201d It\u2019s a recognition that we are all trying to achieve the same dream. Couple that idea with\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modern technology, and a shared strength emerges. \u201c(Today\u2019s generation) continually asks themselves, &#8220;What am I going to do about it?\u201d says Jones.\u00a0 \u201cTheir actions inspire, and unify. I see a more diverse array of supporters than ever, and I think that\u2019s due to their ability to leverage technology and shape the larger narrative. When I was a kid, my parents taught me: &#8220;keep your head down, don&#8217;t stand out.\u201d This generation does just what the founders of this nation did: they\u2019re not satisfied with asking &#8211; they take things!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think they definitely ask the hard questions,\u201d says Odom. \u201cThey strip away the niceties and make demands for things, as Ivan said. The Founders didn\u2019t ask, they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Black people have always been conditioned, by design, to ask. Today\u2019s generation isn\u2019t built that way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Our Radical Role<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RingCentral technology connects people and ideas worldwide. That can be a massive force multiplier in the fight for equality and justice. But only if we continue to live the values we want to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing number one in UCaaS and CCaaS isn&#8217;t enough,\u201d says Jones. \u201cOur technology can help connect people and ideas with the power to change the world. Our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts inside the company can set an example. As we gain strength, we\u2019ll have to be acutely aware of the partnerships and investments we enter into, and continually work to set an example. It doesn\u2019t sound radical when I say it. But it can lead to radical results.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I look forward to a year that\u2019s not only better for Black Americans, but better for us all. Hearing your voices reminds me\u2014we\u2019ll only get the future we hope for if we\u2019re also prepared to demand it.\u00a0 I hope you\u2019ll reflect on Dr. King\u2019s life and message today, and
