Everything from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded unemployment benefits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a great migration among working-aged adults have all been thrown into the pot as possible causes for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hiring crisis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a look at some of the more popular theories:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\">Early retirement played a <em>huge<\/em> role<\/h3>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/avivahwittenbergcox\/2021\/11\/16\/the-great-resignationactually-a-mass-retirement\/?sh=19935f8918ba\">recent investigation<\/a> of the numbers, around 60% of the people who left the workforce actually retired. Around 1 million of them were on pace to retire anyway during the pandemic&#8230; and another 1.5 million retired early.<\/p>\n<p>This impact can&#8217;t be ignored, but there&#8217;s not much employers can do to recoup this loss. Luckily, there&#8217;s a huge new generation entering work over the next few years: Gen Z.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"rc-post-content-cta <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded unemployment benefits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stemming from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the cause.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as states have opened back up and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded unemployment benefits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have come to an end, the great migration of workers expected to return to the workforce simply has not materialized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Wahlquist, president of the American Staffing Association, the country\u2019s largest recruitment-industry group, told Bloomberg:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cPeople who have been on the sidelines have by and large stayed on the sidelines. Nothing has changed in regard to the benefits that have fallen off and the need for people continues to grow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So\u2026 why is that?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An increased focus on quality of life for current and future employees<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/hybrid-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to our hybrid work research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 55% of employees today expect at least a hybrid work week, if not an entirely remote working experience:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-stats-section\">\n<h2>The state of hybrid work in a post-pandemic world<\/h2>\n<div class=\"post-stats\">\n<div class=\"post-stats-item\">\n<p class=\"post-stats-item-number\">67%<\/p>\n<p class=\"post-stats-item-text\">of businesses don't plan to return to five days a week in the office<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"post-stats-item\">\n<p class=\"post-stats-item-number\">55%<\/p>\n<p class=\"post-stats-item-text\">of employees expect a hybrid work environment going forward<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"post-stats-item\">\n<p class=\"post-stats-item-number\">60%<\/p>\n<p class=\"post-stats-item-text\">of businesses report steady productivity in their switch to hybrid work<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"button-container\">\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/2021_state_of_hybrid_work_report.html\" class=\"rc-button rc-button-transparent-purple\">Source<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic shutdowns, working from home, and tragic personal illnesses and losses have made a lot of people rethink every aspect of their lives: their personal relationships, their psychological health, even their careers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many workers saw how their companies, which were strictly in-office before 2020, adapted successfully to a 100% remote environment, thanks to helpful <\/span><a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/what-is-cloud-communications\/\">cloud communications<\/a> tools. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, a staggering number of employees have no interest in going back to the office every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who can blame them when that often means precious personal time lost to long commutes? In a market that heavily favors employees, they can afford to pick and choose the jobs that offer what they need to maintain their improved quality of life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans\u2019 saving spree a possible reason for fewer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> job seekers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unemployment benefits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stimulus checks and social safety nets have helped many Americans not only weather the storm of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but thrive financially. Reduced spending and increased saving behaviors have put some workers on a trajectory for greater financial freedom to be a bit more picky about their choice of jobs as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shutdowns<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> end and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reopenings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The great\u00a0<em>migration<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to continuing surveys from the Pew Research Center,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Americans have been on the move since the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> began.
