The less-than-good news: given their age, Gen Z applications might have little experience or limited higher education. They\u2019re defined as being born <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/01\/17\/where-millennials-end-and-generation-z-begins\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between 1981 and 1996<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning they\u2019re now aged between 25 and 40. The new cohort is Generation Z, born from 1997 onwards. This makes the oldest of them around 24. Sometimes, 1996 is used as a starting point, but 1997 is more common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should be noted here that these groups are not defined exactly by science. The only group with an official designation from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2014pubs\/p25-1141.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US Census Bureau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are Baby Boomers\u2014those born between 1946 and 1965.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen Zers are characterized by more than their age or birth year. There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aecf.org\/blog\/what-are-the-core-characteristics-of-generation-z\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several commonalities <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we assign to this group, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>They\u2019re racially diverse.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> With the shifting demographics of the US population, Gen Z is the last cohort that will be predominantly white. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aecf.org\/blog\/what-are-the-core-characteristics-of-generation-z\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it stands now,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they\u2019re 52 percent white, 25 percent Hispanic, 14 percent Black, and four percent Asian.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>They\u2019re the first generation raised with the Internet and mobile devices from birth.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0That\u2019s to say, they were born into a world where technology was widespread and part of everyday life and where that tech was evolving rapidly into the <\/span><b>cloud-based computing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> common today.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>They face more financial challenges than the previous two cohorts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019ve seen their parents struggle with the after-effects of the Great Recession, and getting on the property ladder is more difficult than at any time since WW2.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>They face greater mental health challenges than previous generations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgu.edu\/blog\/stress-mental-health-generation-z1906.html#openSubscriberModal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 45 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Gen Zers say their mental health is \u201cgood or excellent.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some may think of Gen Z as being the luckiest of recent generations, the reality is that they face more challenges than their parents did. However, as the world continues to change in this digital era, they have the advantage of being the most tech-savvy, with an easy understanding of <\/span><a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/business-phone-system-benefits\/\">business phone systems<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other tech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s this quality that makes the group especially attractive to companies looking to recruit a long-term workforce.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a id=\"why\"><\/a>Why should you hire Gen Z right now?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why hire Gen Z? The list of reasons is long and includes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Optimism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Despite rising inequality and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2020\/01\/09\/trends-in-income-and-wealth-inequality\/#:~:text=The%20growth%20in%20income%20in,majority%20of%20Americans%2C%20is%20shrinking.&amp;text=The%20share%20of%20American%20adults,1971%20to%2051%25%20in%202019.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shrinking middle class<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gen Zers are optimistic about their futures, with 85 percent believing they\u2019ll be better off than their parents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Career vs. money<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Gen Z often prioritizes having a successful career with a good job title and making money over other life factors such as marriage or traveling.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eagerness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because they\u2019re focused on their careers, they\u2019re eager to learn<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and to start moving up the employment ladder. That means they\u2019ll take on internships or volunteering opportunities to enhance their resume.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Independence.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gen Z tends to be more independent than millenials and thus more able to work on their own, making them ideal candidates if you have a work-from-anywhere policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Time.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As well as being the youngest generational cohort, Gen Zers do not like the idea of wasting time. They\u2019ve been born into a world where, thanks to advances in tech, anything and everything is at their fingertips: information, education, entertainment, and the growing world of eCommerce.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tech-savvy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unlike previous generations, using tech is second nature to most Gen Zers. As tech has evolved, they\u2019ve quickly adapted to new hardware, software, and features. They\u2019re sometimes referred to as \u201cthe Tik Tok generation\u201d as they\u2019ve been at the forefront of that platform\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wallaroomedia.com\/blog\/social-media\/tiktok-statistics\/#:~:text=In%20November%20of%202018%2C%20TikTok,Sensor%20Tower%20in%20December%2C%202020.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapid growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They learn quickly, even when presented with new (to them) systems such as <a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/small-business-call-center\/\">call center software<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a id=\"strats\"><\/a>11 strategies for recruiting and hiring Gen Z<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, you know who Gen Z are. You know their qualities and what problems they face. But how do you go about recruiting them?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Target them now<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the current cohort of working-age Gen Zers aged between 16 and 24, you need to think about recruiting (or at least attracting their interest) now. That means segmenting them into three groups: those who plan to start work straight from high school, those who plan to go to college, and those who\u2019ve already graduated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of any targeting of top talent will be experimental, and part will be based on the same sort of data that informs your marketing. You may not be advertising specific jobs at this stage, but you should be seeking to expand awareness of your company to pique interest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may offer internships or part-time positions and should use Gen Z\u2019s preferred platforms to do so, such as Instagram and Snapchat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Emphasize opportunities<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Gen Zers want stability, but they also like to know there will be opportunities within the company they work for. When you create informative content about your business, focus on opportunities for advancement, including any training or further education you&#8217;re willing to provide or sponsor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, financial rewards are important to them too. Emphasize any benefits your company offers, as well as highlighting how they can climb the corporate ladder. These might include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare insurance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disability insurance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life insurance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retirement plans such as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">401(k)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonuses and incentives\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paid time off<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holiday entitlement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flexible work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job security<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Consider freelancers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on your business type and model, you may not want all of your workforce to be permanent and\/or contracted. Equally, many Gen Zers either do not want a permanent anchor or struggle to find this due to fluctuations in their chosen field and the ongoing effects of the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/531012\/freelancers-by-age-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 percent of Gen Zers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are freelance. This may be because of the barriers mentioned or because they want the freedom of working from anywhere. With advanced techs, such as <\/span><a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/unified-communication-platforms\/\">communications platforms<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that allow <\/span><a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/cloud-collaboration-software\/\">team collaboration<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regardless of location, freelancing is an option that can suit both parties. So, don\u2019t count out this type of talent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Be tech-friendly<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You know your recruitment targets are more tech-savvy than any other generation, but are you? To connect with Gen Z, you need to speak their language (and no, that doesn\u2019t mean saying something like, \u201cHey fam, let me spill the tea on this lit job.\u201d). It means communicating with them via their preferred <a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/instant-messaging-programs\/\">instant messaging program<\/a> or even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/video-call.html\">video call<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also means every part of your online presence (website, social media, etc.) has to be fully optimized and mobile-friendly for them to access. Present a positive culture<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a recruitment target perceives your company culture negatively, they won\u2019t proceed with the process.
