We support our people through wellness programs, self-care days, and a culture of openness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, we spoke with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chris-lombardi-a155909\/\"><b>Chris Lombardi<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on why it\u2019s time for companies to start addressing mental health in the workplace.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health and work have always had somewhat of a one-sided relationship. From the day we enter the workforce, we\u2019re taught to bring only our best selves to our jobs\u2014to leave our problems at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But work isn\u2019t what it used to be. During the pandemic, we saw record-levels of job uncertainty and massive changes in our lives\u2014all of which exacerbated an already-growing decline in national wellness. Suicide ranks #10 in leading causes of death in the US, and it increased by 33% between 1999 and 2019. The more we choose to ignore it, the more we prevent people from achieving their best work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, we sat down with <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chris-lombardi-a155909\/\">Chris Lombardi<\/a>, Partner Success Manager at RingCentral<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to discuss his personal journey and how companies can dismantle the stigmas around mental health in the workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49625\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Lombardi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"637\" height=\"635\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Lombardi, Partner Success Manager<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Chris, can you tell us why mental health matters to you?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve lost friends and loved ones to suicide throughout my life. I\u2019ve also battled my own demons when it comes to mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health matters to me because there\u2019s so much that can be done on the prevention side. For example, in the workplace, people can be scared to open up about their issues. It\u2019s taboo and sometimes frowned upon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, people are much more willing to be vulnerable <\/span><b>when they know that they\u2019re not alone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I started doing presentations at work and conferences and got really great feedback. From there, we were able to start addressing this as a company and organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Mental health is a topic many can shy away from. Can you share more details on how prevalent this issue is? What is the impact of now acknowledging it?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you look at it as a whole, suicide is:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>10<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> leading cause of death<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second leading cause of death for those aged 10-34<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth leading cause of death for those 35-44<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, it affects underserved communities at even higher rates:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicide rates are 3 times higher in the LGBTQ+ community<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veteran suicide rates have always been higher than average and during the COVID-19 pandemic, cases have increased the most for that demographic.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Why should mental health be prioritized in the workplace?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People don\u2019t realize how much this can affect productivity and work.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A company can lose up to <\/span><b>27 days a year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from its employees from depression and anxiety. It can also lose <\/span><b>35 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to bipolar disorder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression can inhibit a person&#8217;s ability to complete their job about 20% of the time, and reduces cognitive performance about 35% of the time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For every dollar a company invests in mental health, they\u2019ll get $4 back.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What can you recommend if someone is hesitant to reach out for help at work?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few things. First, they should view their managers or colleagues as resources rather than obstacles. They should realize it\u2019s okay to open up about mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At RingCentral, we have an EAP and all of our employees get a free membership to headspace. Every once in a while, we encourage employees to revisit the resources available.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Often times at work, folks can feel hesitant to reach out for support. How can managers and leadership help?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few things they can do:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Being an ally is simpler than you think. Just ask someone, \u201cHow is your day going? How is your mental health?\u201d It\u2019s easy to ask and to respond! You don\u2019t have to be a therapist. You don\u2019t have to have the answer. You can just listen and share the resources to get help.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Every once in a while, revisit the resources available to employees in a group setting. This can be done at meetings or check ins, and it\u2019s a great way to anonymize the message.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One of the best ways to be an ally is to equip yourself with specific skills to address mental health. One of my favorite resources is the Mental Health First Aid. I think of this as \u201cCPR for mental health\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>How else are you involved with mental health and raising awareness?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, I volunteer and fundraise for the <\/span><b>American Suicide Prevention Foundation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They have a lot of resources for different demographics and mental illnesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, they promote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/explore\/\"><b>The Trevor Project<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for LGBTQ+ Youth and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mission22.com\/home\"> <b>Mission 22<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for servicemembers and veterans. These are two organizations that RingCentral was proud to support through our grant program earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also support <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.movember.com\/about\/cause\"><b>Movember<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Men account for 69% of the suicides in America, and they focus on addressing that level of disproportion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How can we raise awareness and reduce the stigma of mental health?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental illness is the #1 disability around the world. But what makes this statistic so striking is that <\/span><b>society hasn\u2019t yet recognized the gravity of mental illness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014it\u2019s mostly given the backseat to other health concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is, mental illness impacts your physical health, your work, and just about every part of your life. And by not addressing these issues as a whole, we\u2019re holding entire teams, companies, and communities from achieving their best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how can we reduce the stigma around mental health? Let\u2019s start by <\/span><b>openly encouraging people to share their stories<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
