Just 5.7% of U.S. employees were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enotrans.org\/article\/census-releases-full-2019-acs-data-including-commute-patterns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fully remote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019. And it\u2019s forced companies to reconsider what work will look like moving forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many organizations are looking to marry the best of both worlds into new hybrid work models that are part office-based, part remote. In part, this is because there\u2019s no consensus on a single <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/the-3-different-types-of-hybrid-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">optimal schedule for hybrid work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or ideal split between office and WFH days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the absence of a proven formula, companies have lots of questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>How do they determine the best scheduling patterns?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Who gets to choose when employees work from home and when they come into the office?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>What happens if people WFH too much? Or too little?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are two opposing perspectives :<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why employees should not choose their WFH days<\/b><\/h2>\n<h2><b> <\/b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-49573 size-full\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Casual-chat-in-the-office-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" \/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When workers choose their own WFH and office days, there may be little scheduling coordination within teams and companies. There are two main reasons this can be a problem:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Lack of diversity in the office<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While a majority of workers across genders want to work from home, there\u2019s a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuepenguin.com\/news\/women-remote-work-pandemic-2021-survey\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stronger preference to do so among women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This may be due to childcare and household obligations, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/think\/opinion\/covid-shift-remote-work-placing-another-burden-women-housecleaning-ncna1261251\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell overwhelmingly to women during the pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If scheduling is left to individual preferences, there&#8217;s a risk this trend will continue, with men more likely to come into the office and women working from home in order to accommodate their families. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>This may take a toll on women\u2019s representation and visibility in the workplace<\/strong>, reducing diversity in the office and limiting growth for those who work from home more frequently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>In-office workers feel more included<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No commute time, no need to wear pants\u2014there are lots of reasons working from home is appealing. But there are still some distinct advantages to coming into the office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though productivity from home is typically high and teams have found ways to maintain their connection while apart, there are social benefits to working within physical proximity. <strong>Working closely together breeds a <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alankohll\/2018\/01\/31\/5-ways-social-connections-can-enhance-your-employee-wellness-program\/?sh=21e61e76527c\">sense of belonging<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that helps to nurture trust and strengthen relationships and networks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In turn, this may improve the influence and advancement prospects of workers who come into the office more often\u2014while those working from home may never notice that they\u2019re at a disadvantage. By mandating schedules, companies can help level the playing field.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why employees should choose their own WFH days<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-49572 size-full\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Working-from-home-with-daughter-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1366\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, giving workers autonomy over their schedules can also provide some benefits:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Higher job satisfaction<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colleen McCreary, Chief People Officer at Credit Karma, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/09\/20\/a-hybrid-arrangement-might-not-be-what-workers-want-after-all.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">put it best<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cIf my kid has soccer on Thursdays and I have to be in the office all day on Thursday and can\u2019t get him there, that may be hybrid, but it\u2019s not flexible and isn\u2019t working for me. We\u2019re trying to empower employees and teams to take responsibility for what works for them rather than wait for us to set it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, the move to hybrid work shouldn\u2019t really be about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people work. <strong>It\u2019s about giving people more freedom and flexibility over their schedules<\/strong>. This sense of autonomy can help to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666518221000139\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strengthen workers\u2019 feeling of having control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over their lives, which in turn is linked to higher job satisfaction and reduced workplace stress<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>Message of trust<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one likes a micromanager, in part because having a boss peer over their shoulder sends a message that a worker can\u2019t be trusted to get their work done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if the pandemic showed us anything, it\u2019s that <strong>workers are <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/7-remote-work-statistics-you-should-know\/\">highly productive<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> on their own<\/strong>. This includes tasks that require them to coordinate schedules and collaborate with teammates. Allowing employees to continue on this basis sends a strong signal that you trust them to do their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Hybrid isn\u2019t \u201cone size fits all\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are compelling arguments on both sides, and at the end of the day, there\u2019s no one right solution. Every organization\u2014and every team\u2014is different, with unique needs and preferences for how to work best together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you figure out your approach to hybrid work, it\u2019s good to remember that both have their pros and cons.
