What is the GDPR ?<\/h2>\n

The confidentiality of personal data <\/b>has become one of the main preoccupations for companies who want to answer their customers\u2019 expectations. Indeed, according to a study published by <\/strong>Pega <\/b> who polled 7 000 people, 93% <\/b> of french consumers want to be able to decide directly the ways their data is used.<\/p>\n

The GDPR, voted by the <\/strong>European Parliament in April 2016 <\/b>, adheres to the direction set by the 1978 Data Protection Act<\/b>. This new legislation aims to protect and regulate <\/b>how personal data is processed in the<\/strong> European Union<\/b>. All companies regardless of their geographic location, who collect and process european citizens\u2019 data are subject to the GDPR.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

What are the GDPR\u2019s main goals?<\/h2>\n

The GDPR was designed to:<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Protect the personal data <\/b> of <\/strong>european citizens<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Hold accountable\u00a0<\/b>companies who<\/strong> collect or handle <\/b>data, especially <\/strong> subcontractors <\/b>who previously were not affected under the 1978 Data Protection Act. <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Standardize the legal framework\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>concerning the protection of data with regulation that can be enforced in all the EU states.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    In the case where a company refuses to comply with this legislation, they can be subject to a fine of 2 to 4 % <\/b> of their total revenue. And, for more serious infringements, they could be sentenced to pay a fine of up to <\/strong>20 million euros<\/b>.<\/strong><\/b><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

    GDPR: a revolution of the current legislation ?<\/h2>\n

    In answer to the Cambridge Analytica scandals, data protection has increasingly become a main concern for companies. GDPR brings many changes to the current legislation such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Appointment<\/b>, under certain conditions, of a Data Protection Officer<\/b> in charge of checking the organization\u2019s compliance to the RGPD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
