And while working from home brought many positives\u2014greater productivity, better work-life balance\u2014<\/span><b>work<\/b> <b>schedules took a hit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Working apart, working together<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working from home doesn\u2019t just mean freedom from commuting. In many cases, it also means freedom from routine 9 to 5 hours. These flexible schedules have made it easier to balance work and personal tasks. But they\u2019ve also resulted in mismatched routines within teams and less scheduling alignment with colleagues than before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a study published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/amp\/2021\/08\/the-endless-digital-workday\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Business Review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, researchers looked at the work behaviors and schedules of individuals spread across 22 teams at six Fortune 500 companies that went remote during the pandemic. They found that for remote workers, the digital day is truly endless\u2014at any given time of day, at least one member of a team is working.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also found that <strong>remote teams rarely work all at the same time<\/strong>. Although 90% of workers still maintain traditional 9 to 5 hours to some degree, schedules are often staggered and individualized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found no times when everyone was online at the same time. Scheduling overlap hits a high of <strong>71% between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.<\/strong> (meaning 71% of teammates are online at that time). There\u2019s also afternoon peak with <strong>60% overlap that occurs between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.<\/strong> But at best, an average of 29% of team members aren\u2019t online when everyone else is.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>How irregular schedules impact productivity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the impact of this lack of scheduling alignment? It\u2019s mixed, actually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the study, team overlap had <strong>no impact at all on some 33% of business processes<\/strong>. Whether it\u2019s answering a question, providing input, or some deeper form of cooperation, there are many aspects of work that require teamwork.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found that <strong>41% of business processes benefited from team schedule overlap<\/strong>. This suggests that to optimize teamwork for remote and hybrid teams, there\u2019s a need for some degree of scheduling coordination.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Creating alignment for a hybrid world<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rise of long-term hybrid and remote work means the structured schedules of the office may be behind us. Companies like <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/inside-google\/life-at-google\/hybrid-approach-work\/\">Google<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have already announced that hybrid work will be the new normal; across organizations only a minority of executives\u201421%\u2014believes that coming into the office a full five days a week is a <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/en\/library\/covid-19\/us-remote-work-survey.html\">requirement for maintaining a strong culture<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that the vast majority will need to find ways to bring back some alignment to employee schedules. Here are some ways to do so (while maintaining flexibility at the same time).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>Establish together time <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because we know some types of work flourish when teammates are online at the same time, it\u2019s a good idea to plan for together time. Rather than leaving schedule overlap to chance, establish set times where the whole team is expected to be available\u2014and encourage employees to schedule work that benefits from or requires collaboration during those periods.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\">Don\u2019t micromanage schedules<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Night owls, early risers\u2014individuals are productive at different times of day. With a third of business processes unaffected by team overlap, it\u2019s a good idea to respect those preferences and give employees some scheduling freedom to manage their solo tasks.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\">Block off time for solo work<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work benefits from team input\u2014in fact, some tasks are easier to get done when there are no distractions. To give workers room to focus, it\u2019s a good idea to not only encourage scheduled together time\u2014but to also make sure people block off uninterrupted time for solo work too.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\">Respect time off<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working remotely gives often people the flexibility to work when it suits them best. But when some team members work irregular hours, it can create pressure on others to be responsive at those times too. It\u2019s a recipe for burnout. But this risk can be reduced by setting clear expectations around responsiveness and respecting people\u2019s off hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hybrid and remote models mean work is becoming more flexible and fluid\u2014and not only when it comes to location. New workplace models are freeing workers to do their best work from anywhere <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at any time.
