Others were scrapped entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">past year<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many employees have been exposed to the risk of COVID-19 and been obliged to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-quarantine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The lucky ones were able to return to work after a negative <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 test result<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Others vulnerable to the disease were classified as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and were forced to shield themselves from the workplace indefinitely for their own <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-being<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These uncertainties necessitated a shift towards <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the use of <a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/what-is-cloud-communications\/\">cloud communications apps<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that provide remote employees with the tools and features necessary to carry out their work effectively, like virtual collaboration and face-to-face interaction with HD audio and video.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47771\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Blog-header-image-for-RC-Web-App-blog.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"930\" height=\"700\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees are less likely to leave&#8230; if they&#8217;re still employed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Businesses had to alter or even cease normal operations. Many workers around the world were either furloughed or lost their jobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The percentage of the workforce that quit their jobs has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.capterra.com\/future-of-work-after-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rising steadily since 2011<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Well, that was until we got to 2020! Growth had been humming along around 1.1% per year. But that all changed during the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 2020, a drop of 3.7% in job leavers was observed. This is the lowest US employee turnover we\u2019ve seen in five years!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A survey by Capterra revealed that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.capterra.com\/future-of-work-after-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of workers are planning to stay at the job they have now. And 84% of employees say that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made them like their job and employer about the same or more than they did pre-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But for many who were laid off, extended unemployment has been a life saver: one they aren&#8217;t inclined to give up without an offer that pays well and offers better flexibility. As it stands in 2021, it&#8217;s a workers&#8217; market when it comes to hiring.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/what-is-workplace-flexibility-and-why-is-it-important-for-employees\/\">Flexible work<\/a> is here to stay<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For essential workers, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first responders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and those in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">care facilities<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, wearing protective suits, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">face masks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other types of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">face coverings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other PPE became a part of their job, and it still is. But for many in office jobs, work was <\/span>moved out of office<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And because of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social distancing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> restrictions, this meant work had to be done from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.capterra.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pie-chart-showing-how-covid-19-affected-where-smal.png\" alt=\"Pie chart showing how COVID-19 affected where small businesses employees work (i.e., at an office, at home, etc.).\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote working<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enabled businesses from all industries to maintain their services during the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And many found <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote working<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducive to a better work-life balance. As of June of 2020, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.capterra.com\/future-of-work-after-covid-19\/#methodology\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17% of employees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wanted to continue flexible working permanently. But by January of this year, that number had already increased to 23%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly one in four employees of the US workforce would like to switch to <\/span><a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/hybrid-remote-work\/\">remote work<\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">permanently! This means businesses will need to plan and adapt accordingly. In a survey of 800 senior executives, two-thirds stated they were<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/future-of-work\/what-800-executives-envision-for-the-postpandemic-workforce\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increasing investment in automation and AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Automation and AI have been deployed in a range of industries. But, at the same time, it\u2019s creating different opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to McKinsey, more than 100 million workers will need to find a different occupation by 2030.
