{"id":48984,"date":"2021-08-26T05:14:10","date_gmt":"2021-08-26T12:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"\/us\/en\/blog\/?p=48984"},"modified":"2025-03-13T06:39:29","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T13:39:29","slug":"celebrating-womens-equality-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/us\/en\/blog\/celebrating-womens-equality-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Women&#8217;s Equality Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August 26<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is Women&#8217;s Equality Day in the United States, marking the 101<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anniversary of the passing of the 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Amendment\u2014giving women the right to vote.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a few things to say about the state of women in the workforce in 2021, and RingCentral\u2019s commitment to their success.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees all American women the right to vote.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 1980,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/05\/03\/in-year-of-record-midterm-turnout-women-continued-to-vote-at-higher-rates-than-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more eligible women voters have said they voted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than men in every Presidential election<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Where we came from<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits individual states from denying the right to vote to any US citizen on the basis of sex, essentially granting women in the United States the right to vote. While the amendment supposedly guaranteed \u201call\u201d women in the United States the right to vote, many women of color were still denied this right and faced voter suppression for decades to come. For example, the voting rights of Native American women were not recognized until 1924. For Chinese American women, 1943. Japanese and other Asian American women couldn\u2019t vote until 1952. African American women (who worked tirelessly to support the women\u2019s suffrage movement as far back as the 19th century,) were not granted the right to vote until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cDon\u2019t Iron While The Strike Is Hot.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The passage of the 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Amendment isn\u2019t the only reason we\u2019re celebrating today. On August 26, 1970, tens of thousands of women across America joined the Women\u2019s Strike for Equality, using the 50th anniversary of women\u2019s suffrage to bring renewed attention to women\u2019s rights.\u00a0 It was the biggest women\u2019s mobilization in U.S. history until the Women\u2019s March in 2017, and the results were powerful. Soon after, a male-dominated Congress passed Title IX of the Higher Educational Amendments Act in 1972 and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act in 1974.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nowhere near finished<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">51 years later, there\u2019s still plenty of work to do. Women make up more than 50% of the US workforce in 2021\u2014but still only earn about 87% of what their male counterparts do. For women of color, that disparity is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/women\/reports\/2020\/03\/24\/482141\/quick-facts-gender-wage-gap\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even worse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women make up only 20 percent of Congress, and fewer than 22 percent of city mayors. The Equal Rights Amendment has been awaiting ratification since 1972. And we are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> waiting for our first female commander-in-chief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Leaning in, standing up<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change is painfully slow in coming. And there\u2019s no magic formula for instant economic and social justice\u2014but that doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019re powerless. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/metoomvmt.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#MeToo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/timesupnow.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> #TimesUp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aapf.org\/sayhername\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#SayHerName <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movements are all changing the nature of social justice, both in and outside the workplace and are fueled by the global communications revolution. Our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/diversity-and-inclusion.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity Vision Statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for 2021 reaches across all genders, orientations and backgrounds, but three of its primary goals are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equal gender representation\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More women at the board level\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empower women in leadership<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, RingCentral takes active strides to ensure Women\u2019s Rights are being stood for. Some key findings from the report are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are paid less and it hits harder in an economic crisis\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enterprises with gender-diverse leadership perform better\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embracing flexible work improves your diversity practice<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Good for women = good for business<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender equity isn\u2019t just a feel-good issue. It\u2019s good business. According to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/employment-and-growth\/how-advancing-womens-equality-can-add-12-trillion-to-global-growth\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey Global Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, up to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$28 trillion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be added to the global GDP if we were to achieve full gender equality by 2025. That\u2019s a serious chunk of change. And exactly the kind of conversation that could lead to actual change.
