Healthcare payers must take steps to promote better mental and behavioral health among their members.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How can payers promote member mental and behavioral health?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of ways in which payers can promote member mental and behavioral health:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continue funding telehealth for mental health providers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer incentives for healthcare providers to use healthcare communication tools<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer training for healthcare communication tools<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make it easy to navigate the member experience when seeking mental health services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicate with mental health providers through a unified communications platform<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Continue funding telehealth for mental health providers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2021, Cigna published a study about<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigna.com\/about-us\/newsroom\/innovation\/covid-19-impact-virtual-and-behavioral-health\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changing member behaviors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Researchers discovered some things that weren\u2019t entirely surprising: telehealth visits rose due to the risk of contagion, and more patients sought behavioral health services because of increased anxiety (among other issues).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, what surprised researchers was that even as telehealth usage for other specialties decreased, patients continued to use telehealth for mental healthcare. This finding shows there\u2019s a clear demand for mental health services as society recovers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This patient demand offers payers an opportunity to support mental health. The first and most important step payers can take is to continue funding telehealth mental health services. They represent a safe and reliable option for patients who might not have access to mental healthcare otherwise (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/05\/10\/cost-and-accessibility-of-mental-health-care-in-america.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 112 million Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live in areas where mental health providers are scarce).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Provide incentives for healthcare providers to use healthcare communication tools<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of telehealth as an equation. It was no longer safe to see patients face to face. Incentives might vary from provider to provider. Providers will feel more comfortable, gain value from all of the platform\u2019s features, and create a better experience for patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Make it easy to navigate the member experience when seeking mental health services<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The experience for insurance plan members seeking mental healthcare has frequently and sadly been deeply unpleasant and frustrating. Payers have been accused of denying claims or<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2020\/07\/03\/despite-covid-19-increase-insurance-companies-pull-back-telehealth\/5352297002\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placing obstacles in members\u2019 paths to treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members complain that when they contact their healthcare payer, they\u2019re passed off from representative to representative. No one seems to be able to help them; no representative has enough information to solve their problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn\u2019t have to be the case.
