{"id":48802,"date":"2021-08-09T07:05:32","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T14:05:32","guid":{"rendered":"\/us\/en\/blog\/?p=48802"},"modified":"2025-03-13T06:39:32","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T13:39:32","slug":"equal-access-inside-and-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/us\/en\/blog\/equal-access-inside-and-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Equal access, inside and out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlights:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/disabilityandhealth\/infographic-disability-impacts-all.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">61 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disabled adults in the United States \u2014 roughly 26% of the adult population.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.dol.gov\/dolfaq\/go-dol-faq.asp?faqid=66&amp;topicid=6&amp;subtopicid=117\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55.8%<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of disabled people between the ages of 16-64 are currently in the workforce<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>We\u2019re all in it together<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you think about it\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everyone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who lives long enough eventually becomes a part of the disabled community. That\u2019s why RingCentral puts such an emphasis on accessibility\u2014because it doesn\u2019t just benefit the workforce of today, but the one we\u2019ll build tomorrow. As the 31st anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) approaches, we are proud to be working towards increasing accessibility for everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>The way to the ADA<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before 1990, if a building didn\u2019t have a ramp, a wheelchair-bound person wasn\u2019t getting in. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Braille wasn\u2019t included on signage, a blind or low vision individual was out of luck.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These inequities aren\u2019t new; the first American disability activist groups appeared in the 1800\u2019s, and since then thousands of disabled Americans have lobbied, worked and protested for accessibility and equal rights.\u00a0In 1973 the Rehabilitation Act was passed, legally classifying the exclusion and segregation of people with disabilities as discriminatory for the first time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon after, Section 504 of this act was added, actively prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability. Concerned about costs and enforcement, the Nixon and Ford Administrations attempted to stall the regulations both by rewriting them and calling for further study. The final responsibility fell to President Carter\u2019s head of the U.S. Health, Education and Welfare Department, Joseph Califano, who resisted signing for the same reasons &#8211; resulting in nationwide protests and sit-ins at HEW offices. The activists\u2019 continuous pressure eventually got the act signed, paving the way for even greater reform.On May 9, 1989, Congressman Tony Coelho (D, CA) introduced the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to Congress. The ADA ensured that people with disabilities were given the same basic rights as everyone else. The act passed the House in May 1990 and was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26 of that year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Looking inward, reaching out<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At RingCentral, disabled employees and customers aren\u2019t an afterthought. We design every product and process from the ground up to make sure everyone has access. Closed captioning helps the hard of hearing. Audio narration helps the visually disabled. When and wherever we discover a need, we approach it as an opportunity &#8211; how can we make our products and services accessible to a wider audience?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That thinking applies to our employees, as well. Wherever there\u2019s an issue, we work to provide a resource. From workplace accommodation to counseling and leave, every employee matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have we done enough? Probably not. Will we keep innovating? Definitely. Giving more people more access to resources within our company so more people can connect around the world?
