{"id":48648,"date":"2021-07-27T19:54:26","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T02:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"\/us\/en\/blog\/?p=48648"},"modified":"2025-03-13T06:01:59","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T13:01:59","slug":"when-42-isnt-enough-gender-equality-matters-in-both-business-and-sports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/us\/en\/blog\/when-42-isnt-enough-gender-equality-matters-in-both-business-and-sports\/","title":{"rendered":"When 42% isn&#8217;t enough: Gender equality matters in both business and sports\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>This blog is part of the series &#8220;The power of the female athlete.&#8221; View the complete series at the links at the end of this article.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOver 5,000 women make up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/28\/sports\/olympics\/women-athletes-competition.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly half<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all athletes competing in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. But we haven\u2019t reached the same gender parity on the executive board of the Tokyo Olympics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In March 2021, the Tokyo Olympics announced that 19 women will sit on its 45-member board, meaning women will now make up 42% of Olympic executive board members. The announcement called attention to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/03\/05\/811192459\/a-push-to-get-more-women-on-corporate-boards-gains-momentum\"> gender equality in boardrooms<\/a> and raised questions about whether there should be equal men and women in leadership roles and on all company boards.<\/p>\n<p>Having women in leadership brings unique perspectives and experiences to any organization or leadership team, has a positive impact on workplace policies, and can boost innovation and revenue. So, while it represents progress, 42% isn\u2019t enough\u2014in business or in sports.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Working toward gender equality at the Olympics<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s Olympic Games were widely touted as the most gender-equal in history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInclusion, diversity, and gender equality are integral components of the work of the International Olympic Committee (IOC),\u201d the organization<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/ioc\/news\/ioc-statement-on-gender-equality-in-the-olympic-movement\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced in a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in February, calling the 2020 Olympics the \u201cfirst gender-equal Olympic Games.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time, the IOC also requested that all 206 National Olympic Committees (NOC) send <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/ioc\/news\/ioc-statement-on-gender-equality-in-the-olympic-movement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least one woman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to compete. They have also encouraged each NOC to have one man and one woman carry their country\u2019s flag in the Opening Ceremony. Still, the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee has a thornier history with gender equality. (For example, this is only the first year that women competitors who are nursing will be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/family\/story\/nursing-moms-allowed-bring-children-tokyo-olympics-78578476\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allowed to bring their children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February, the former president Yoshiro Mori was also<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/11\/world\/asia\/yoshiro-mori-tokyo-olympics-resigns.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced to resign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after suggesting women talk too much in meetings. At the time, women made up a tiny fraction of the board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mori was succeeded by Seiko Hashimoto, a woman and winner of an Olympic bronze medal in speed skating, who<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/olympics\/story\/_\/id\/30989069\/tokyo-olympics-add-12-women-executive-board-reach-42-symbolic-gesture\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promoted gender equality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Olympic executive board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move is a sign people are beginning to understand the importance of creating gender equality in leadership. But sexism in the Olympics is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenewdaily.com.au\/sport\/rio-olympics-2016\/2021\/07\/16\/tokyo-olympics-equality-women\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-documented<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and has come from multiple angles\u2014from coaches to the media. Putting more women on the executive board is just one small step toward true gender equality in the Olympics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why gender equality matters in sports and business<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numerous studies now reveal gender equality and gender parity in leadership have various benefits, including<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insperity.com\/blog\/gender-diversity-in-the-workplace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> improving a company\u2019s profitability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.piie.com\/publications\/working-papers\/gender-diversity-profitable-evidence-global-survey\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the Peterson Institute for International Economics, for example, showed that companies and organizations with females in at least 30% of leadership positions saw profits around six percentage points higher than competitors with fewer women in leadership roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And aside from these obvious economic benefits, having more women in leadership roles brings a diversity of opinions, which leads to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/236543\/business-benefits-gender-diversity.aspx\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more creativity and better problem-solving<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, 82% of Americans surveyed say it\u2019s vital that men and women have the same chance to advance in their careers, according to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockefellerfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Women-in-Leadership-Why-It-Matters.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a survey by the Rockefeller Foundation.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Overall, the public is in favor of seeing more women in leadership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But organizations oftentimes struggle to adapt and still have a long way to go. For example,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockefellerfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Women-in-Leadership-Why-It-Matters.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only 21 women are currently leading Fortune 500 companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and last year<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/women-now-hold-record-22-6-of-russell-3000-board-seats-in-the-us-301132157.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-third of the Russell 3000 index companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had one or no women on their boards.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How one member of RingCentral&#8217;s board promotes gender equality<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mignon Clyburn, a member of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RingCentral<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s board of directors, says it&#8217;s essential for women to advocate for themselves and ensure they are positioned to take on leadership roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-48648-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Power-of-a-woman_2_1_compressed.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Power-of-a-woman_2_1_compressed.mp4\">\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Power-of-a-woman_2_1_compressed.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nThat means you have to make it easy for people to recognize your talents in your field of interest. Maybe you can volunteer in the area or get involved in some other way, but it&#8217;s essential to pull up a seat at the table, be present, and engage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Things will not change if we continue to sit here and acknowledge the problem and not do other things proactively to make sure that our talents are there for the world to see,&#8221; Clyburn says. &#8220;We need to be in that space. We have to make sure that we are where the decision-makers are.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clyburn is no stranger to taking on important roles. She was a Commissioner of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from 2009 to 2018, and she was also its acting chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Clyburn says it&#8217;s imperative to have goals and timetables for gender equality when it comes to running a business. You can&#8217;t sit around and wait for things to happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;[Gender parity] will not happen if it&#8217;s not codified.
