This is, in large part, thanks to women who, after facing adversity themselves, decided to be a driving force for change.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glaring gender inequities exist across every industry, from sports and business to relationships. To create lasting systemic change, we need people who speak up, push back, and use their influence to open opportunities for marginalized communities; these powerhouse women in business and athletics are doing just that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48651\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Card_2_v2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Female athlete: <\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Naomi Osaka urges sports to prioritize athletes\u2019 mental health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May, Naomi Osaka, one of the world\u2019s top tennis players, was<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2021\/05\/30\/naomi-osaka-french-open-fine\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fined $15,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for refusing to join a press conference. Her goal had been to protect her mental health, but she unwittingly started a broader conversation about mental health in the sports industry. Image credit\uff5cYahoo news.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intention was never to inspire revolt,\u201d she wrote in her recent essay for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/naomi-osaka-mental-health-ok-not-ok\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TIME<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBut rather to look critically at our workplace and ask if we can do better.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osaka, who plays for Japan and received the high honor of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcolympics.com\/news\/naomi-osaka-lights-olympic-cauldron-tokyo-opening-ceremony\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lighting the Olympic cauldron<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Opening Ceremonies Friday night and her Olympic game has been strong. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6083772\/naomi-osaka-toyko-olympics-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TIME<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, off the court, her decision to step away from tennis between the French Open and the Olympics proved controversial and opened a broader discussion on the importance of maintaining mental health, both inside and outside of sports. \u201cIt\u2019s O.K. to not be O.K.,\u201d Osaka wrote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6077128\/naomi-osaka-essay-tokyo-olympics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a recent cover essay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for TIME. \u201cMichael Phelps told me that by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/100-most-influential-people-2020\/5888802\/naomi-osaka-icon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speaking up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I may have saved a life. If that\u2019s true, then it was all worth it.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have shown that athletes are already at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/cjsportsmed\/fulltext\/2020\/03000\/mental_health_issues_and_psychological_factors_in.8.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a greater risk for mental health issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as depression and anxiety. Osaka has called on the French Open and other sports organizations to enact measures that allow athletes to protect their mental health and set boundaries when necessary without facing penalties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Female in business: <\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Whitney Wolfe Herd creates a safer online dating experience for women<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5947727\/whitney-wolfe-herd-bumble\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whitney Wolfe Herd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was once the vice president of marketing at Tinder, but in 2014, she left her position and later filed a lawsuit against the dating app for sexual harassment. Instead of leaving the world of dating apps forever, she decided to create a new app that would put control back into the hands of women: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bumble.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bumble<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being one of the newer online dating apps (Bumble was founded after other major dating apps such as OkCupid, Zoosk, and Hinge) Bumble is second only to Tinder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/826778\/most-popular-dating-apps-by-audience-size-usa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in number of US users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Earlier this year, the company went public and closed with a market cap of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/11\/bumble-ipo-bmbl-starts-trading-on-nasdaq.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over $7 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48640\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48640\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48640 size-medium\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-26-at-10.45.29-AM-300x159.png\" alt=\"Whitney Wolfe Herd at her deck.\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Whitney Wolfe Herd. Those violations are sent to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5947727\/whitney-wolfe-herd-bumble\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a team of 2,000 human moderators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are swift to penalize or ban the users responsible, which helps make the app a safer place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herd is advocating for safer digital spaces beyond the dating app scene, too: she supported<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/christine-lagorio-chafkin\/texas-digital-photograph-law-bumble-whitney-wolfe-herd.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new legislation in Texas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that made sending lewd photographs without consent a crime. This put Texas on the small but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2020\/02\/02\/sending-unsolicited-sexual-pictures-needs-stopped-column\/4613853002\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growing list of states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are introducing legislation to penalize not just revenge pornography, but unsolicited explicit photos. In a world where technology has put women in particular at an even greater risk of harassment, Herd\u2019s actions are a significant step in the right direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Female consultants: Mandy Price and Star Carter help businesses create systemic change<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mandy Price and Star Carter are no strangers to discrimination in the workplace. Price was once labeled a firm\u2019s \u201cdiverse partner.\u201d Meanwhile, Carter took maternity leave twice, and despite maternity leave being part of her benefits, she was told her promotion to partner would be delayed by a year as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Price and Carter decided to take these experiences and create<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kanarys.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanarys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a data-driven platform for tracking diversity, equity, and inclusion metrics at companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By giving companies a transparent look at their DEI data, providing coaching sessions, and building frameworks to help companies implement DEI recommendations, Price and Carter are helping companies create more diverse and inclusive teams. But they\u2019re not stopping there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People are starting to say, \u2018Hey, if we can\u2019t retain women and people of color, there\u2019s something within our organization that needs to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/slideshow\/356977\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Price<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanarys does more than help create diverse teams. The company also provides the resources to create safe, equitable spaces to retain those teams, encouraging long-term, systemic change, not just improved vanity metrics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Female board member: Cassie Nielsen gives women more seats at the table<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, only<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/global\/en\/pages\/risk\/cyber-strategic-risk\/articles\/women-in-the-boardroom-global-perspective.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5.3% of board chair positions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were held by women, despite the fact that women make<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/slideshow\/356977\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70\u201380% of household purchasing decisions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cassie Nielsen, the talent partner at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmgpartners.com\/\"> VMG Partners<\/a>, decided we couldn\u2019t wait around for things to change on their own, so she created<a href=\"https:\/\/5050wob.com\/\"> 50\/50 Women on Boards<\/a> with the goal of creating gender balance and diversity on corporate boards.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48642\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48642\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48642 size-medium\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-26-at-10.53.33-AM-300x250.png\" alt=\"Cassie Nielsen\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cassie Nielson. Image credit\uff5cForbes.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The group hosts workshops and educational events and programs and conducts research to keep a finger on the pulse of gender diversity in business. The nonprofit also works with companies to place women on their boards. According to their research, women now hold<a href=\"https:\/\/5050wob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Q1-2021-Infographic_Final_EQUILAR.pdf\"> 24.4% of board seats<\/a>, thanks in part to WOB\u2019s efforts.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Female sports team: Norwegian beach handball team challenges outdated traditions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Handball Association&#8217;s Disciplinary Commission fined the Norwegian women&#8217;s beach handball team $1,700 for wearing \u201cimproper clothing.\u201d The clothing in question: tank tops and shorts similar to what the men&#8217;s team wears.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Beach handball is a relatively new sport, but women\u2019s sports teams are no stranger to sexist dress code. It wasn\u2019t until the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/new-bikini-rules-for-olympic-beach-volleyball\/\">2012 London Olympics<\/a> that the rules changed for beach volleyball, allowing the women\u2019s teams to wear shorts.<\/p>\n<p>Norway has been petitioning for shorts to be considered proper attire for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/sports\/norwegian-women-s-beach-handball-team-fined-not-playing-bikinis-n1274453\"> over a decade<\/a>, to no avail, so the women\u2019s team decided to take action. As a result, there was an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/sports\/norwegian-women-s-beach-handball-team-fined-not-playing-bikinis-n1274453\"> outcry on Twitter<\/a> calling attention to the outdated and sexist regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople cheered on us for going in front of several teams and taking the brunt,\u201d says player<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/563800-norwegian-womens-beach-handball-team-fined-for-wearing-shorts\"> Katinka Haltvik<\/a>. \u201cNot all teams can afford to pay such fines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team was more than willing to pay the fine and take the backlash for the sake of other sports teams. And that willingness to put themselves in the line of fire may be the very catalyst needed to drive change in sports.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Women are a driving force behind change<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/gender-gap-2020-report-100-years-pay-equality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Economic Forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimates true gender equity won\u2019t be achieved for nearly 100 years. An increase in women board members and improved protections for female athletes are only the beginning of a long journey to more equitable treatment in the office and on the field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These women are working to speed up that timeline.
