Speaking out"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tapping our personal power with the Asian American Writers\u2019 Workshop\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlights:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RingCentral\u2019s Pan-Asian Network advocates for diversity and inclusion of the Pan-Asian employee community, enriching the work culture and experience of our employees globally.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Asian American Writers\u2019 Workshop (AAWW)\u00a0is \u201cdevoted to\u2026providing an alternative literary arts space at the intersection of migration, race, and social justice.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/aapi-heritage-month-what-we-learned-about-inclusivity-and-culture-as-a-company\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthening AAPI culture @RingCentral<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May was Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month\u2014and it was a hard one. The daily news was bleak, filled with images of violence against people of Asian descent. RingCentral\u2019s Pan Asian Network Employee Resource Group responded by partnering with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aaww.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asian American Writers&#8217; Workshop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to shift the narrative and amplify the voices of our colleagues and community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Asian American Writers\u2019 Workshop is a nonprofit literary arts organization founded in 1991 to support Asian American writers, literature and community. We partnered with AAWW to host a workshop that allowed our colleagues to express their pain, fear, frustration and hope through a guided writing exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>Writing it down. Working it out.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guided writing workshop was inspired by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2021\/mar\/07\/lee-isaac-chung-minari-korea-arkansas-oscars\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lee Isaac Young<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of the critically acclaimed film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minari.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Participants started off with a stream of consciousness exercise, writing down a series of different disparate memories. Participants were then guided on connecting those memories into a narrative of shared experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>Capturing the experience.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The takes were as diverse as the group itself, reflecting the wide range of ways people experience being Asian &#8211; and the diversity of AAPI culture itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few excerpts:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"quote-text-break-point\">\n<p class=\"qute-text\">After serving 11-years in the United States Army, I feel like I have earned the right to (feel) safe in my own country. I shouldn\u2019t have to warn my elderly mother to only leave her house if it was on fire. And a perfectly simple girls\u2019 trip shouldn\u2019t be complicated with strategies of how to minimize my Chinese-ness so that I am not targeted. I used to wonder &#8211; \u201cWhen I will be American enough?\u201d But now I understand it was never about assimilating in order to be American. No. It has always been about how to minimize my foreignness.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"quote-text-author\">\u2014Jules Coffman, Paralegal - Regulatory Compliance<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"quote-text-break-point\">\n<p class=\"qute-text\">While the world sorts itself out, you can still be kind to your neighbors, colleagues, and people around you. Regardless of where or who you are, that still goes a long way.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"quote-text-author\">\u2014Jaysin Nguyen, Sr. Manager, Solutions Engineering<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"quote-text-break-point\">\n<p class=\"qute-text\">Growing up a 5th generation Chinese American, I never realized I was anything other than American. Sure, I knew my Chinese name and loved eating at banquets and Lunar New Year was my holiday, but that never made me less American. <\/p>\n<p class=\"quote-text-author\">\u2014Ally Gee, Manager, Employee Programs<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"quote-text-break-point\">\n<p class=\"qute-text\">When I was a teenager, I remember waiting in line at a coffee shop with my mother and the cashier rudely shouted \u201cSpeak English!\u201d to the lady in front of us. Without hesitation, my mother walked up to the cashier and told him to stop giving the lady a hard time. I&#8217;m struggling mentally and emotionally because I&#8217;m feeling targeted, divided, and more different than ever. Together.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pan-Asian Network ERG is working to end prejudice by strengthening the voices of AAPI employees, customers and community members.
