Commuter stipends<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working from home can make concentrating easier, but at the same time, workplace relationships are still important. For teams that work a hybrid model, it\u2019s a good idea to have employees come into the office once in a while.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s stopping them? Commuting is a big one. After all, who wants to spend time in traffic when they could wrap up their work day and already be at home?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s where commuter stipends come in. Many companies already offer employees a stipend to use on public transportation every month, such as Uber, Lyft, or the local rail. Others might also have free electric vehicle charging stations and valet parking services. Anything that eases the burden of driving for employees will encourage them to visit the office.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>2. Lunch stipends<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cafeterias have long been a mainstay of office life, and we at RingCentral have enjoyed it for years. They also drive better engagement and productivity, which is why tech companies like Google have famously invested in their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidburkus\/2015\/07\/02\/the-real-reason-google-serves-all-that-free-food\/?sh=5a1181d595f6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee food programs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/the-cafeteria-and-other-parts-of-office-life-will-change-dramatically-after-coronavirus-2020-05-04\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cafeterias will likely change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and some may close altogether\u2014as companies return to the office post-pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To maintain the benefits of workplace lunches, hybrid and remote companies may want to consider lunch stipends or reimbursement. For example, during COVID, some organizations offered $20 reimbursements on Fridays to cover Postmates deliveries for employees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>3. Home office reimbursements<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many workers\u2019 home office setups this past year have been less than ideal. Janky chairs, dining room tables that don\u2019t align screens to eye level, closets turned into workstations\u2014these ad hoc transformations were necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they also caused a world of pain: sore backs, repetitive strain injuries, and so on. These can erode productivity, reduce job satisfaction, even cause longer-term health issues for employees. But home office allowances can dramatically improve people\u2019s working arrangements\u2014and perhaps reduce other costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, giving 350 workers the funds to buy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalworkplaceanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/edd\/2020\/10\/The-Future-of-Home-Office-Cost-Sharing.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ergonomic chairs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> works out to roughly the same as a single annual workers\u2019 comp claim, data shows. Meanwhile, the productivity gains of covering sit-stand desks are sufficient to cover the cost of the furniture within just 143 minutes of use. In addition to desks and chairs, companies may also want to consider extending such stipends to computer monitors, Wifi boosters, and other such equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>4. Mental health benefits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While productivity has largely increased during work from home, so have issues such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/07\/28\/remote-work-burnout-is-growing-as-coronavirus-pandemic-stretches-on.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burnout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and social isolation. This can in turn increase the risk for mental health problems such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bryanrobinson\/2020\/06\/19\/is-working-remote-a-blessing-or-burden-weighing-the-pros-and-cons\/?sh=4c74b05240a9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety, depression and stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But employers can mitigate these risks by reassessing their existing mental health benefits and ensuring that they sufficiently cover options for both prevention and treatment. This includes things like meditation and stress management programs, therapy and personal time off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>5. Wellness funds<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health isn\u2019t the only type of wellness that can take a dip if not proactively addressed. From strain injuries due to poor office setups to a reduction in physical activity from moving around less, remote and hybrid work can take a physical toll on employees too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perks such as gym memberships and flexible health spending accounts can help in this respect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>6. Vacation time<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The links between remote and hybrid work and productivity have been well-established\u2014but so has the resulting burnout. This may be because when the lines between home and office are blurred, workers have a harder time switching off. Most employees weren\u2019t doing a great job of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kateashford\/2017\/05\/31\/vacation\/?sh=58328006726a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using their vacation time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before the pandemic, but time off is even more of an imperative now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extending vacation can be a powerful and important benefit because it allows workers to restore and recharge. Accordingly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themuse.com\/advice\/how-unlimited-vacation-works-in-reality-and-not-just-in-company-handbooks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unlimited vacation time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has become an attractive and growing perk. But whether your company is still measuring out days or allows workers to take off as much time as they need, it\u2019s important to back up PTO policies with <\/span><b>a culture that encourages time away from work<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>7. Childcare stipends\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much was made of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/essay\/why-has-covid-19-been-especially-harmful-for-working-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burden of childcare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the pandemic\u2014especially on women. And only 45% of workers polled in a survey by PwC said their companies did a good job during COVID of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/en\/library\/covid-19\/us-remote-work-survey.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extending childcare benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Inadequate childcare can decrease the effectiveness of remote and hybrid work because it diverts parental resources away from their jobs.
