I was one of the few Asian-Americans in my predominantly white school, which was often at odds with what was \u201cnormal.\u201d Like, for example, being the girl who\u2019s supposed to know Jackie Chan, or who can help everyone with their math homework. Math was my worst subject!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, my parents wanted me to assimilate. To become fully American, so to speak. So I grew up a bit confused. Was I Chinese? American? It took me until adulthood that I really accepted my identity as somewhere in the middle. And that was totally okay.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Addressing AAPI as a company<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the opportunity arose to become the executive co-sponsor of RingCentral\u2019s new <\/span><b>Pan-Asian Network<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> group a few months ago, the mission seemed doubly important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, I\u2019m very proud to work at an organization that goes to lengths to make all members of its community\u2014employees, partners, customers\u2014feel safe and valued. Second, as an Asian-American, I started to see how the rise of anti-Asian sentiment affected people around me\u2014my colleagues, family members, and yes, myself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, <\/span><b>this sentiment is nothing new.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Several years before COVID, I remember feeling shocked and stunned when a woman in my suburban, Bay Area neighborhood pulled down her eyes at me as if to say, \u201cYou\u2019re Asian.\u201d It made me feel singled out\u2014like maybe this melting pot we live in isn\u2019t as welcoming as I grew up thinking it was.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>RingCentral\u2019s Pan-Asian Network<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here at RingCentral, our mission is all about building better human connections\u2014and that starts from within. Our Pan-Asian Network has been a source of support and comfort, but it\u2019s also about activating our experiences and points of view to <\/span><b>make the world a better place<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we recently held a Real Talk episode with <\/span><b>Tu-Han Phan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RingCentral\u2019s Senior Social Impact &amp; Diversity Business Partner, and <\/span><b>Victoria Lee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.welcometochinatown.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welcome to Chinatown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a grassroots initiative that aims to support Chinatown communities around the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t\t<\/p>\n<div class=\"rc-bottom-cta rc-bottom-cta__landscape\" style=\"background-color:#FF8800;\">\n<div class=\"bottom-cta-img\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1690\" height=\"794\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-26-at-11.50.55-PM.png\" class=\"responsive-image\" alt=\"Racism, bias, ...\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"bottom-cta-copy\">\n<div class=\"rc-bottom-cta__text\" style=\"color:ffffff;\">\n<h3\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"rc-bottom-cta__title headline-copy\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstyle=\"\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t>Racism, bias, and the model minority myth. It\u2019s been healing and supportive, and these conversations also offer some direction for how to stand with Asian friends and colleagues during these challenging times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some takeaways we\u2019d like you to know:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>1. We\u2019re not a monolith<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders, we represent hugely diverse communities and geographies, all with their own cultures and histories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to celebrate that cultural diversity,\u201d said Lee. \u201cThere are so many different ethnicities that are categorized as Asians, but typically, when we&#8217;re speaking about Asians, people think of East Asians. We\u2019re treated as one category and people. I&#8217;m trying to take the time to educate myself about more within the Asian community, and not just learning about myself as a Chinese-American.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>2. We\u2019re not all overachievers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People tend to stereotype Asians as a \u201cmodel minority\u201d full of smart overachievers. But the perception that Asians are doing so well can mean those who need help are overlooked. \u201cOne in four Asian-Americans lives in poverty,\u201d said Lee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve also had the highest unemployment rate throughout COVID because many of them, particularly in New York City or California, work in service, food, hospitality. We need to really pull back that model minority myth to ensure that resources and access reach these groups.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asian stereotypes harm us in other ways too. I personally can think of times where I haven\u2019t raised my hand or pushed myself harder because I don\u2019t want to feed into those ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My father, who passed away a few years ago, was very much about hard work. But he also told me the thing he felt held him back in his career was not speaking up enough. He used to say he felt like he had to break through his own glass ceiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>3. It\u2019s not just about food (but sometimes it is, and that\u2019s OK)\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47860\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/WTC3of6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"881\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of Lee\u2019s mission at <\/span><b>Welcome to Chinatown<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is imparting a greater understanding that there are real people behind Chinese restaurants and shops. \u201cWe want to change the perception that Chinatown small business owners, they&#8217;re not transactional,\u201d said Lee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou&#8217;re not just coming to this community for a cheap eat or to buy tchotchkes. We want people to understand the rich history and legacy that they have brought to building this community and making ethnic enclaves like Chinatown so great.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, there\u2019s nothing wrong with loving our food\u2014we sure do. For Lunar New Year at RingCentral, we brought in a chef and did a <\/span><b>virtual dumpling cooking class<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that had incredible turnout of employees coming together. Food is definitely one of those sparky moments for me that made me want to do this. I have to say, I&#8217;m a big fan of Asian food.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>4. Be an accomplice, not an ally<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s been a lot of talk about how to be allies for Asian-Americans, Lee wants to see those who care take it even further. \u201cStanding in solidarity with us of course is important but be an accomplice and be active in helping to fight for racial justice,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And don\u2019t forget to check in with your AAPI friends, who\u2014if they\u2019re anything like me\u2014are probably feeling burned out and exhausted from everything that\u2019s been going on. \u201cI can&#8217;t say how important it is to really check in on people and where it&#8217;s checking in on people is because it spurs dialogue,\u201d said Lee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch the whole conversation <a href=\"https:\/\/go.ringcentral.com\/ringcentral-realtalk-creating-a-corporate-culture-of-change-registration.html\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At a glance: As we wrap up AAPI Heritage Month, I wanted to share my experiences both as a business leader in the tech world and, more importantly, as a woman of Asian descent.
