The country committed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/us\/covid-19-vaccine-doses.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">200 million doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being administered by President Biden\u2019s 100th day in office, and the country met that goal a week ahead of plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As more people are vaccinated, we move further into uncharted territory. The pandemic isn\u2019t over, but more fully vaccinated people mean fewer are vulnerable to the most severe COVID-19 effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Should work-from-home stay?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it\u2019s time to address the elephant in the room: Should companies bring employees back to the office? Or should we continue to work from home?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The uncertainty is complicated by the fact that working from home went really well for most businesses. Less than one in five executives want to return to how we all worked pre-pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But employers and employees have different ideas about when to return to the office. Three-quarters of executives anticipate at least half of their employees will be back in the office by July 2021. Sixty-one percent of employees, on the other hand, only want to spend half their time in the office by July.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1 in 3 ready to quit their jobs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one study, almost one in three workers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/1-in-3-employees-will-quit-if-wfh-ends-according-to-a-new-survey\/#:~:text=See%20All%20Topics-,1%20in%203%20employees%20will%20quit%20%22if%20WFH%20ends%2C%22,according%20to%20a%20new%20survey&amp;text=Turns%20out%2C%20the%20new%20office,experiment%20of%202020%20winds%20down.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would quit their job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if they can\u2019t continue to work remotely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But not all jobs can be done from home, of course. Employees in retail, restaurants, manufacturing, medicine, and other industries with hands-on jobs have to show up and work in person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/skills-for-working-remotely\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not all employees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> want to work from home. Different personalities and situations react differently. Working remotely is lonely for some people, perhaps especially single, young workers who may rely on the office for their social life. Some people live in small homes without the space to set up a home office free from household distractions. Some need boundaries between their work and home lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What seems more likely in our post-pandemic days is a hybrid work experience, split between work done remotely and at the office.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Social distancing in shared spaces<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some companies are already back in the office, even without the protection of vaccinations. Being back at work\u2013or heading back soon\u2014will require social distancing in shared spaces, probably using a combination of safety strategies that don\u2019t look much like pre-COVID work times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rotating schedules will keep the office population down at any one time, which will help with social distancing. Employees will need to be conscious of distancing, as well as mask-wearing. There will be more cleaning than before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/community\/office-buildings.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restrooms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will need to have accessible sinks, soap, water, and paper towels, and employees should be encouraged to wash their hands often throughout the day for at least 20 seconds. Employers should encourage outdoor seating for lunches and breaks when feasible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meeting rooms are especially a concern. Even vaccinated people are wary of packing into a meeting room with others, and yet meetings are critical to a well-functioning business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Travel is not recommended<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However we start our return to \u201cthe new normal,\u201d travel isn\u2019t recommended yet. Not every employee feels safe to travel yet, and clients won\u2019t, either. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claims that many industries realized much of their employees\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-03-26\/will-business-travel-return-to-normal-after-covid__;!!J-1DKIBqn-Pi!UqzAVHoQCO5nTXbLa2N_hOONR9KeiXg1P3he_w2ZCXHJhJtEvTnjMEJE9bE8NmfdpcXw$\">travel for business<\/a> before COVID-19 wasn&#8217;t necessary. It\u2019s possible there will be changes to the idea of routine business travel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/features\/video-conference\/overview.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video conferencing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it turns out, was the biggest winner during COVID. It turned out to be crucial to the survival of many businesses, whether their employees were all at home or a combination of remote and in person.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Preparing for future disruptions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID has been a harsh reminder of how fragile businesses can be, and out of necessity, we learned a lot of lessons. One was that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/netstorage.ringcentral.com\/ebook\/business_continuity.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business continuity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is critical. Disasters even beyond a global pandemic can strike at any time, and being prepared is vital. While we can\u2019t predict every crisis, businesses can and should have a plan for the unexpected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the pandemic hit the US, some companies were well equipped for it, with well-defined and tested tools and processes for remote work, and others weren\u2019t at all. A unified communications tool is critical to keep your employees working and collaborating, no matter where they are.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you prepared for the next sudden disruption to our work-as-normal? It could be anything\u2014a local disaster or a national or global one. What have you learned from this huge, unexpected lesson, and has it made you better prepared? Whatever technology your company uses, does it support remote work?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Vaccines don\u2019t mean a return to normal<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s critical to remember that vaccines aren\u2019t a magic bullet. While they\u2019re important, they\u2019re not 100% effective, and not everyone will be vaccinated. It will be essential to continue wearing a mask and maintaining social distance. Someone who\u2019s vaccinated could still get a mild or asymptomatic case of COVID and spread it to others. Scientists also don\u2019t know yet how long the vaccine is protective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we mask, distance, and do our best to navigate post-pandemic work life, remember that it\u2019s too soon to know how work will change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere&#8217;s no right or wrong answer in what organizations should do,&#8221; Elisabeth Joyce, Vice President of Advisory in Gartner&#8217;s HR practice, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/what-the-covid-vaccine-rollout-means-for-returning-to-the-workplace\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TechRepublic<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;We&#8217;ve never played this game before, and the best way we can prepare ourselves is to think through all the considerations.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Highlights: 1 in 3 employees are ready to quit their jobs if work from home ends If businesses return to the office, so much will look different from years before.
