You can participate in a half or full-day fast, join the group for a presentation,\u00a0&#8220;How UX Principles are Aligned with\u00a0Ramadan&#8221; and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> iftar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (breaking of the fast) celebration, beginning at 7:15 PM PST.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So. What <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ramadan, exactly? What\u2019s the deal with fasting? And how on earth is Ramadan like UX? We sat down with the group to get a brief overview of Ramadan, and a peek into the UX team\u2019s presentation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mudassir Azeemi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Sr. UX Interaction Designer | Design System Governance<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Anam Barakzai, Ph.D<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; UX Researcher<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Omer Malik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; UX Interaction Designer<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Shazeeye Kirmani <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Lead UX Researcher<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Moomal Qadir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Sr. Customer Success Manager<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h2 h3\"><b>What is Ramadan?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year in Islam \u2014 Muslims believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Mohammed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramadan is a time of spiritual discipline \u2014 of deep contemplation of one&#8217;s relationship with God, extra prayer, increased charity and generosity, and intense study of the Quran. It\u2019s also a time of celebration and joy, meant to be spent with loved ones (when there\u2019s not a global pandemic.) During the entire month, Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset, and<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramadan ends with a three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr,\u00a0or the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast, where family and friends gather for meals and exchange presents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe word \u201cRamadan\u201d is derived from the Arabic root word \u201cRamidha,\u201d says Omer, meaning \u201cintensely hot.\u201d It\u2019s a symbolic reference\u00a0 &#8211; think of the observance as a process that \u201cburns away\u201d one\u2019s misdeeds.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Qadir, the intentions behind Ramadan are to \u201creflect and strengthen our spirituality, empathize with the less fortunate, reflect on our blessings and take the time to be a charitable individual.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>The Ramadan Fast<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars \u2014 or duties \u2014 of Islam, along with the testimony of faith, prayer, charitable giving, and making a pilgrimage to Mecca.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating any food, drinking any liquids, engaging in sexual activity, smoking cigarettes, or chewing gum, from dawn to sunset.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a rigorous practice, but one that\u2019s well worth it, says Qadir. \u201cMy hope is that people take away the idea that Ramadan is more than just fasting\/abstaining from eating. It is a time where Muslims work to remove additional distractions, so we can focus on the humanity around us. Whether it\u2019s through charitable causes, being a better neighbor, getting in tune with our spirituality, or reflecting on the past year, Ramadan is a time that can be shared with the community when we all sit down to break our fasts, together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>Ramadan and\u2026UX?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VP of UX Michael Peachey was engaging with Azeemi in a weekly 1-on-1 meeting, when they hit upon the idea that there are distinct parallels between the ideas that drive a successful UX process and the ideas behind Ramadan.\u00a0 \u201cI was learning about how Mudassir and his family observe iftar, and the more we talked, the more parallels we drew. I\u2019m excited to see the team\u2019s presentation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without giving away too much, we asked the team for a few highlights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLesson one is simple,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barazkai.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cRamadan and the fast are about intention. UX design is, too. Every single decision we make, we should be intentional about.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEmpathy is a critical element of UX,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malik<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cand that\u2019s exactly what Ramadan asks us to focus on. In design, we\u2019re asked to step into the user\u2019s shoes. Ramadan is the same, only it asks us to do so across every aspect of our interactions with others.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBiases, conscious and unconscious, play a big role in design decisions,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azeemi.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThe reflection we do during Ramadan gives us a chance to really think about how biases manifest in our lives &#8211; including the UX design part of our lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re interested in seeing the full presentation, join the team on May 6.
