If Emily could focus a little more on her time management skills and keep a closer eye on the length of video meetings to ensure that clients aren\u2019t waiting too long, before long her client reviews will hit five stars.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, Emily\u2019s manager focuses first on her strengths: her relationships with her clients and her ability to work under pressure. Only then does Emily\u2019s manager mention her poor time management skills. If Emily\u2019s manager had chosen to initially focus on the negatives, she may have become defensive and have been less willing to make the necessary improvements.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Use valid evidence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should always use valid, substantial evidence when you carry out an employee review. If you don\u2019t back up criticism with valid evidence, your employees could have good reason to complain to your human resources department.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare the following two employee review examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMike needs to focus more during working hours as he is often disengaged and takes too long to complete tasks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMike is not active in team messaging channels and takes 3\u20134 hours to respond. Since January, he has completed 5\u20136 cases a day, around half his target of 12 cases a day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first statement contains no valid evidence and uses only generalizations. The second statement uses valid, measurable data to analyze the employee\u2019s performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using measurable data when you carry out an employee review is especially important for employees who work from home.
