While it\u2019s a trend that\u2019s been gathering steam for a number of years, the onset of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19 pandemic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced a lot of employers to shift to remote working almost overnight. Now it seems it\u2019s here to stay as a permanent fixture, and we\u2019re all still grappling with what exactly that means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the smallest <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">startups, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call centers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the biggest business behemoths (such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opens up a lot of new possibilities. It allows employers to take their pick of the top talent from a much wider area, giving firms a much bigger pool to choose from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also presents new possibilities to employees and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">job seekers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the new world of work, it\u2019s possible to be a true <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital nomad<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pursuing exciting lifestyle and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> job opportunities<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wherever it takes your fancy. Those that don\u2019t will risk losing out on talented people &#8211; including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">customer service<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">representatives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital marketing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEO <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professionals, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">graphic design<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specialists &#8211; to other businesses. This could have serious and lasting impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you call it remote working, working from home (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/wfh\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WFH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or working from anywhere, this is a phenomenon that\u2019s bringing about far-reaching changes to the way we work. In this guide, we\u2019ll provide you with a comprehensive introduction; we\u2019ll discuss what <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means, bust some of the myths surrounding it, and assess the pros and cons. In particular, we\u2019ll look at why \u2018working from home\u2019 no longer reflects the full reality of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is it called when you work from anywhere?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of different terms for the phenomenon under discussion here. A lot of people use the term \u2018remote working\u2019, while others call it \u2018working from home\u2019. Both terms are a little too limiting, however, and don\u2019t capture the full complexity of these new working arrangements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll discuss this in more detail later on, but a lot of office-based teams already work with colleagues distributed in different locations; individual businesses and other organizations may have multiple office hubs. This may therefore be considered a kind of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/remote-work-playbook.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nor does \u2018working from home\u2019 give us a full flavor of how a lot of people are working when they\u2019re not in the office. Certainly, a lot of people who do work remotely end up doing so from home, but it\u2019s not always feasible. Some workers live in crowded houses with families and roommates, which is hardly conducive to consistent productivity. Working from anywhere, on the other hand, allows employees to use alternative locations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, this is one of the things that makes it potentially so liberating. You can work from the coffee shop, in the local library, or even the beach as long as you can get a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WiFi <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connection there. It is, essentially, up to you (and to some extent, your employer) where you work from. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all that in mind, then, it seems more fitting to use the term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/forget-work-from-home-long-live-work-from-anywhere\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work from anywhere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as you could potentially do exactly this<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or at least, from anywhere you can find reasonably quick internet. This is the term we\u2019ll generally use to discuss the matter at hand in this guide. There are, however, a couple of other related terms we should discuss briefly here.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h2 h3\"><strong>Flexjobs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/5-types-of-flexible-work-arrangements-to-offer-employees\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flexible work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can mean a lot of things. It might mean being able to choose your own working hours for a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> full-time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> job within a set time frame; employers can allow you to decide when you come into work in the morning and when you leave, so long as you work a specific amount of hours in between.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may also mean job sharing, where two people work <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">part-time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the same role &#8211; possibly even in different<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> time zones <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; and share the work between them. Arrangements such as these are increasingly common, as employers take account of the lifestyle needs of employees (particularly with regard to childcare).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have seen the term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018flexjobs\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used to describe working arrangements like these. It\u2019s important to distinguish <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flexjobs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as it might not necessarily entail the latter. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/remoters.net\/jobs\/trends\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allow you to determine where you work (within reason), while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flexible work <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gives you greater freedom to determine when and how you work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><strong>Telecommuting<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telecommuting is a less common term these days, but it\u2019s still used reasonably frequently. It\u2019s certainly one kind of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it denotes a specific type of remote working. It\u2019s not the same thing as working from anywhere. Specifically, telecommuting is usually used to refer to employees who work remotely, but from within easy physical reach of their workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if you live within commuting distance of your employer and they give you the option of working from home<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">either as a regular or an occasional thing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you could consider yourself as being a telecommuter. The main point is that you\u2019re able to journey to your employer\u2019s office as and when you\u2019re called upon to do so. This is relatively easy when you\u2019re <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">job searching<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a major city like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but much harder if you live in a more isolated area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, all this limits your options somewhat and doesn\u2019t offer you the kind of freedom and autonomy that true <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work from anywhere<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> arrangements do. However, it\u2019s worth noting some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">companies that hire remote workers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do use \u2018telecommuting\u2019 as a synonym, so be sure to check <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">job postings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carefully before writing any of them off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Can you work remotely from anywhere?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working from anywhere gives you much greater freedom in deciding where you work from. A lot of people are quite happy to do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/will-we-work-from-home-forever\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work from home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jobs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but working in the home isn\u2019t always feasible. If you\u2019ve got young children running around, for instance, it can be difficult to find the peace and quiet you need to really concentrate on your work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employers might not be able to look over your shoulder to see how productive you are, but they will be able to tell if the quantity and standard of your work have dipped. This could mean that your freedom to work remotely is withdrawn, and your employer demands that you start coming into the office to work instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, of course, it could simply mean that you lose your job &#8211; and then you\u2019ll have to start your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">job search<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all over again. It\u2019s essential, therefore, that if you are working remotely, you find a space where you can do so with minimal distractions. We\u2019ve all been there, struggling to maintain our concentration amid the office chit-chat and all the various comings and goings of a typical working day. For a lot of people, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote opportunity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is appealing as it allows them to spend more time concentrating solely on the tasks they\u2019ve been set.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/remote-work-tips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working from anywhere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when compared to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work-at-home<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> arrangements, gives employees greater freedom to find a location from where they can work well and concentrate consistently. This means that both employees and their employers can benefit from greater productivity and a higher standard of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as we\u2019ve noted, employees will need to ensure that their chosen working location has reliable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WiFi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If their connection is continually dipping in and out, they won\u2019t be able to do their job as well and their employer (as well as clients) may struggle to get in touch with them, causing confusion and frustration for all concerned.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Types of remote working arrangements<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve already outlined the differences between telecommuting, working from anywhere, and working from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home opportunities<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Now we need to take a closer look at the different types of remote working arrangements and team structures. These can vary quite substantially, but for our purposes, we\u2019ll concentrate on three remote working structures here:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fully remote teams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flexible remote teams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distributed offices<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fully remote teams, as the name indicates, are composed entirely of people who are working in disparate locations. This could be as part of a fully <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote company<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the employer doesn\u2019t have a single central office. Alternatively, there could be a central office, but the particular team you\u2019re in isn\u2019t based there and instead works from anywhere. For instance, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marketing agency <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might have an in-office sales team, but an entirely remote design team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flexible remote teams are a kind of halfway house between fully remote working and office-based working. They may have some members who work in their employer\u2019s workspace all or part of the time, alongside colleagues who work elsewhere (whether it be from home or some other location of their choosing). An example of this is a fashion wholesaler who has some of their sales team in-office, others on the road, and still others <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working from anywhere<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, relatively few office-based employers now insist on having all their employees in the same <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical offices<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all the time. We\u2019ll discuss this in more detail in the next section, but now that more employees are working from anywhere, employers are seeing benefits for themselves too &#8211; such as significant savings on office rents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some employers continue to operate multiple offices spread across different locations. Single teams may be spread across a number of different offices. The distributed offices model remains a commonplace kind of remote working (even if we don\u2019t always think of it as such), but it\u2019s one that may be scaled back somewhat in the years ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What working from anywhere means for employers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve touched on some of the major advantages which working from anywhere might potentially have for employers, but let\u2019s look at them in some more detail here, as they could have transformative implications for many millions of people in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lower costs:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Office rents can be very expensive, so giving employees the option of working from anywhere can reduce these costs quite substantially.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Higher productivity<\/strong>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some employers have been reluctant to embrace remote working for fear of it having a negative impact on employee productivity. However, the evidence we have appears to suggest the opposite. According to one study<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 77% of remote employees reported that they had actually been more productive.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>More talent to choose from<\/strong>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Previously, employers had been restricted to recruiting employees who lived within commuting distance of a physical workplace, or who were prepared to relocate. When employees can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work from anywhere<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">companies hiring<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can choose from a much wider pool. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote job opportunities<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are now keenly sought after.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Improved staff retention<\/strong>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this day and age, employees are used to switching between jobs. Work-from-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anywhere jobs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tend to be associated with higher rates of staff loyalty. According to Gartner<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, flexible, remote working arrangements can boost retention rates by over 10 percent. This could save employers a lot of money on recruiting and training new hires.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are just some of the potential implications that working from anywhere could have for employers. It\u2019s clear that there are huge upsides to allowing staff to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work from anywhere<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Those businesses which are quickest to adapt could glean a crucial early competitive advantage; those that fail to make the change may find themselves losing out on both new and existing talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pros and cons of working from anywhere for employees<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we\u2019ve talked about what working from anywhere might offer employers, we should look at what it offers employees. It\u2019s fair to say that remote working can have its pros and its cons.
