{"id":46688,"date":"2021-02-12T11:41:16","date_gmt":"2021-02-12T19:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"\/us\/en\/blog\/?p=46688"},"modified":"2025-03-13T06:02:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T13:02:11","slug":"the-pandemic-is-making-it-easier-for-the-first-woman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/us\/en\/blog\/the-pandemic-is-making-it-easier-for-the-first-woman\/","title":{"rendered":"The pandemic is making it easier for the \u201cfirst\u201d woman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Shonda Rhimes broke into the world of television writing, she discovered a workforce that looked very different from her.<\/p>\n<p>In the early-2000s, she wasn\u2019t just <i>a<\/i> black, female showrunner in the industry, she was <i>the only <\/i>black, female showrunner. Years later, in her memoir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Year-of-Yes\/Shonda-Rhimes\/9781476777122\"><i>Year of Yes<\/i><\/a>, she dubbed her position of uniqueness as being a F.O.D. \u2014 \u201cFirst. Only. Different.\u201d That distinction meant she bore more than the normal workload most other showrunners experienced \u2014 as well as all the pressure of running a TV show people looked to her as a <i>representative <\/i>for black writers and female showrunners everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[W]hen you are an F.O.D., you are saddled with that burden of extra responsibility \u2014 whether you want it or not,\u201d Rhimes wrote in <i>Year of Yes<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>During her time working in television, she got to know the other F.O.D.s running network shows. All shared her experience: the same pressures, responsibilities, and prejudices.<\/p>\n<p>While Rhimes had a platform to share her experience, many others suffered in silence and many still do.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, consider that countless industries are still dominated by men. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/male-jobs-women-underrepresented-numbers-2019-8#women-make-up-just-99-of-the-construction-industry-3\">95%<\/a> of firefighters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/male-jobs-women-underrepresented-numbers-2019-8#women-make-up-just-99-of-the-construction-industry-3\">92%<\/a> of aerospace engineers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/male-jobs-women-underrepresented-numbers-2019-8#women-make-up-just-99-of-the-construction-industry-3\">90%<\/a> of construction workers are male. In each male-dominated company, organization, and team, one woman must become the F.O.D. en route to a more diverse future. And like Rhimes, they will need to bear all the burdens that come with it.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps not.<\/p>\n<p>For some women, the pandemic has been a silver bullet to the pressures of being an F.O.D. Working from home, they were no longer <i>the <\/i>women in the office. They were a screen name on a work chat platform or a signature at the end of an email. Without the extra burden, women have thrived.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\">One small step for a woman<\/h2>\n<p>Every female employee deals with pressures and burdens in the workplace that their male colleagues do not. Companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/women-in-the-workplace\">promote women at a slower rate<\/a> than men, forcing women to work harder for an equal reward. They experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/women-in-the-workplace\">higher instances of burnout<\/a>. They\u2019re more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/03\/07\/women-in-majority-male-workplaces-report-higher-rates-of-gender-discrimination\/\">experience sexual harassment<\/a>. Even their very personal qualities get held to different standards.<\/p>\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/pragyaagarwaleurope\/2020\/03\/03\/are-women-and-men-being-treated-the-same-in-the-workplace\/#85838ad42ebb\">Pew Research Center<\/a> polled Americans on society\u2019s most valued traits, there was a clear divide between genders. Two-thirds of respondents said men should be powerful. More than 90% said women shouldn\u2019t be. Strength was a positive trait in men, but a negative quality in women. Men should be ambitious. Women should be beautiful and maternal. The list goes on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.swe.org\/climate-control\/\">The Society for Women Engineers<\/a> analyzed assertiveness specifically. \u201cWomen engineers were less likely than white men to say they could behave assertively (51% vs. 67%) or show anger without pushback (49% vs. 59%),\u201d wrote the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, one female participant recalled a reprimand from her manager for \u201cgetting emotional\u201d after raising her voice during a meeting. She said this occurred moments after two male leaders had gotten into a \u201cyelling match\u201d with no repercussions.<\/p>\n<p>All those pressures are amplified when you are a F.O.D.<\/p>\n<p>Consider Christian Sismone, a project manager for a health and wellness software company. As a woman of color working in an industry still ruled by straight white men, her experience was blighted by \u201cmicroaggressions, anxiety and overperforming for very little to show for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the first and only person outside the homogeneous core, Sismone felt like \u201cnothing more than a performer.\u201d She describes her daily working experience as one of the \u201cmost mentally damaging\u201d of her life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom racism, sexism, and classism, I have always been a person who is a F.O.D.,\u201d she tells RingCentral. \u201cThis makes it very hard to connect with people, thus limiting my ability to gain access needed to scale up in my work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the coronavirus pandemic changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>As the virus spread around the world, companies began to close their offices. In early spring, Sismone\u2019s employer followed suit. Overnight, her work moved online. She broke free of her office and set up shop at home. There, the enormous pressure of being a F.O.D. \u2014 of being <i>the <\/i>black woman in her team \u2014 melted away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy being online, the constant anxiety of just being me is eased,\u201d she says. \u201cI can breathe without worrying whether I was being too loud, and when I&#8217;m frustrated, I can let off steam without damaging my image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind a screen, Sismone feels she\u2019s judged purely on the merits of her work, rather than the conscious and unconscious biases her colleagues hold. She feels less stressed and more at ease with her role. Free from the pressures others put upon her, she can turn her undivided attention to her work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnline collaboration allows for more focus as we are often trying to keep up with appearances at the cost of the work,\u201d says Sismone.<\/p>\n<p>But this is just the start. The benefits of remote working go far deeper, says Sismone. Working from home isn\u2019t a simple band-aid to the challenge of diversity. It doesn\u2019t merely help diverse employees feel safer. Rather, it helps dissolve the prejudices and discrimination that create hostile work environments in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that unless people want to hash things out, collaboration issues will remain like code behind the scenes,\u201d Sismone says. \u201cMost people, especially in this era, don&#8217;t like confrontation in person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Remote work offers a way to address and resolve tensions. If done well, Sismone says it creates a safe online space where people can dismantle institutional sexism, racism, and classism. As institutional discrimination fades, it will become easier for others to follow in Sismone\u2019s and Rhimes\u2019 footsteps.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\">Breaking the status quo<\/h2>\n<p>Creating a more inclusive workplace isn\u2019t just an advantage for the individual. It\u2019s a boon for the organization, too. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/why-diversity-matters\">Study<\/a> after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-diversity-makes-us-smarter\/\">study<\/a> reinforces the link between diversity and corporate performance. Instead of getting stuck in the status quo, diverse organizations approach challenges and opportunities with fresh approaches and strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Research from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/diversity-wins-how-inclusion-matters\">McKinsey &amp; Company<\/a> reinforced the link between gender diversity and company financial performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies in the top-quartile for gender diversity on executive teams were 21% more likely to outperform on profitability and 27% more likely to have superior value creation,\u201d wrote the report\u2019s analysts. \u201cThe highest-performing companies on both profitability and diversity had more women in line roles than in staff roles on their executive teams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of sticking with the status quo, organizations should make it as easy as possible for F.O.D.s to disrupt homogeneous teams.
