With employees working remotely, there are no longer the face-to-face interactions with colleagues and collaborations we were accustomed to. For many of us, it\u2019s been an entirely new way of working.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We suddenly, unexpectedly, had to figure out how to get the work done from various locations, sometimes using different tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet despite our siloed work lives, we\u2019ve never been more connected. Communicating via team messaging and video conferencing is working. Studies show <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/graphic-detail\/2020\/12\/27\/does-working-from-home-make-employees-more-productive\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more productive now than they were pre-pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Teamwork is different now<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team building in 2021 won\u2019t be the same as in the past. We\u2019re still figuring out how to best encourage and promote teamwork among employees working remotely, whether full- or part-time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know remote working is likely to continue even after the pandemic ends<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PwC\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/en\/library\/covid-19\/us-remote-work-survey.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Remote Work Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published in January 2021, found that remote work has been overwhelmingly successful for both employers (83%) and employees (73%). Less than one in five executives say they want to return to how things used to be, and more than half of employees want to continue working remotely at least three days a week post-COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet 97% of both executives and employees agree a poorly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/technology-signals.com\/the-importance-of-organizational-alignment-and-how-to-achieve-it\/#:~:text=In%20a%20survey%20by%20Clear,ineffective%20communication%20for%20workplace%20failures.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aligned team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> negatively impacts a project\u2019s outcome. And highly engaged teams are 21% more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/nazbeheshti\/2019\/01\/16\/10-timely-statistics-about-the-connection-between-employee-engagement-and-wellness\/?sh=18a0b57c22a0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">profitable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those are striking statistics, especially when our teams are not working together in the same office. Establish clear goals and responsibilities<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of improving teamwork is to achieve the company\u2019s bottom line, but you can\u2019t do that unless they\u2019re clearly defined. Make sure you know just what each employee should accomplish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When describing an employee\u2019s specific role, try to avoid detailing exactly how they should achieve those goals. Instead, rely on the people you\u2019ve selected and their knowledge of their jobs. Trust them to do what you hired them for, and you\u2019ll often see better results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>2. Make effective communication easy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote workers can become siloed and isolated. Businesses need communication systems that are comfortable to use and make communicating easy, so this doesn\u2019t happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/how-it-works.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unified communications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> systems combine messaging, video, and phone so employees can easily choose whichever mode of communication feels right for the situation. Workers use communications more when they are part of the same app. When communications methods are on different platforms, there can be mental roadblocks about switching, which means they are less likely to be used. The result? Lower productivity and teamwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>3. Avoid excess meetings<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes when we can\u2019t meet in person, we\u2019re tempted to schedule more video meetings instead\u2014usually more than necessary. However, study after study shows that too many <a class=\"waffle-rich-text-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/video-call.html\">video calls<\/a> can be counterproductive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you use video meetings in the smartest ways possible. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule them in advance, so there\u2019s time for everyone to prepare and they are worthwhile.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a clear agenda, set a time limit, and stick to both.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep track of how much time you take away from your team\u2019s workday and make sure it\u2019s not excessive.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you do have video meetings, consider the details. Maybe everyone doesn\u2019t need to have cameras turned on. Employees might have different time zones and work schedules, making collaboration harder than in office settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get to know what roles everyone excels at and place them in positions where they can use their strengths to help their team be successful and achieve its goals. When you know your employees, you can consciously create a team\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/cliftonstrengths\/en\/278225\/how-to-improve-teamwork.aspx#ite-282719\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dynamics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of leaving them to chance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be aware of your workers\u2019 strengths and weaknesses. Are they stronger in strategic thinking or relationship building? Are they someone who executes or influences? When your employees are on teams and in positions that are a good fit for their skills and personalities, they have the energy to perform well. Teams that are a bad fit can zap a worker\u2019s energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>5. Recognize achievements<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rewarding a team for its excellent work means its team members learn what excellence looks like and know to repeat what they\u2019ve done. Recognizing your employees improves both their teamwork and your company\u2019s culture. In a remote or hybrid environment, this has never been more important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/cliftonstrengths\/en\/278225\/how-to-improve-teamwork.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says a well-connected team displays three positive characteristics that impact your company\u2019s culture. One is <\/span><b>trust<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or team members being confident the other members are reliable and dependable. Another is <\/span><b>teamwork<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can be defined as an appreciation of other members\u2019 strengths and talents that help the team take on challenges together.
