While we all had to completely reimagine how business would work, consistency and predictability went out the window. Not only did employees pivot to working at home last year, mostly interacting with co-workers through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/features\/video-conference\/overview.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video conferencing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other digital means, but schools and childcare facilities also closed. That means many people are working every day alongside their school-age children who are home doing remote schooling. For many kids, depending on their ages and capabilities, that requires a parent\u2019s help for what can be hours each day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s flipped the employee experience on its head. There\u2019s no longer life at work and life at home, but two experiences that have merged. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultureamp.com\/blog\/how-covid-19-is-changing-the-employee-experience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boundaries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have blurred.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previously, a business was responsible for the employee experience while they were in the office. How does that work now? How does a company support its employees working at home, in very different circumstances, possibly with other non-employees in their environment?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>Employee experience is essential to recovery and innovation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-46471\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Employee-experience-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also fair to ask why companies should focus on the employee experience at all right now when there are so many other issues to contend with. There\u2019s competition right now for available jobs, so why should a company put time and effort into the employee experience? Shouldn\u2019t a business focus on containing costs instead to ensure they\u2019ll recover from pandemic constraints?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While that\u2019s important, it\u2019s critical to focus on the employee experience, too. Perhaps it\u2019s even more significant now than it was before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A positive employee experience has many business <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unily.com\/insights\/blogs\/5-reasons-employee-experience-should-be-the-focus-of-your-enterprise-right-now\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It reduces employee turnover, makes employees more productive and innovative, attracts better talent, means better customer service, and leads to bigger profits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planning for an eventual return to the post-COVID-19 \u201cnew normal\u201d lets businesses consider how to accommodate employees with vastly different experiences. While almost all are experiencing disruption, some are struggling while others are thriving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020-05-20-gartner-survey-finds-64--of-hr-leaders-are-making-emp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gartner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study found 64% of HR leaders prioritize the employee experience in terms of returning to the workplace even more than they did before COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/covid-19-and-the-employee-experience-how-leaders-can-seize-the-moment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says, \u201cthe return phase of the COVID-19 crisis is a good time for organizations to create more tailored responses to workplace challenges, expanding on the goodwill and camaraderie earned in earlier phases.\u201d As organizations enter the next phase of the pandemic, the report says, they must realize that employees have widely different experiences and perspectives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are five steps to perfecting the employee experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>1. Plan for remote hiring<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We won\u2019t all return to our office jobs when the pandemic is over. We\u2019ve proven that remote working can be successful, and it\u2019s here to stay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies will need to provide remote work options to stay competitive. Consider how you will recruit and onboard new employees, and remember that, without geographical limitations, you can reach highly qualified applicants around the globe you wouldn\u2019t otherwise have access to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, it means those highly talented <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/328313\/create-winning-employee-experience-2021.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global candidates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will also have more choices than ever, which is another reason your company must offer a top-notch, desirable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/4-employee-experience-changes-to-stay-competitive-after-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee experience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>2. Set clear expectations<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s never been a more important time to clarify <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/328313\/create-winning-employee-experience-2021.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performance expectations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Consider whether your employees\u2019 responsibilities have changed. Is your business stable enough for the goals that are in place, or should you shift them to different, short-term ones for now? Help your employees reevaluate performance goals and priorities, knowing they may shift again as conditions change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>3. Know that trust is more important than ever<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many companies did a good job during the first phase of the COVID-19 work crisis, conditions keep evolving. As your company moves into the next phase, you can build on that trust you earned by being \u201cpresent, action-oriented, empathetic, and fully transparent,\u201d according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/covid-19-and-the-employee-experience-how-leaders-can-seize-the-moment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to safety and security needs, three other themes have a disproportionate impact on well-being and work effectiveness, McKinsey says. They are: trusting relationships, social cohesion, and individual purpose. Keep these in mind as you move forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Industry Analyst <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/joshbersin.com\/2020\/03\/the-big-reset-making-sense-of-the-coronavirus-crisis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josh Bersin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says we\u2019re in a time he calls \u201cThe Big Reset,\u201d which he defines as a time to rethink our expectations, priorities, how we spend our time, and what we know about work, life, business, and leadership. He says you can reset trust in your company, defining the concept as made up of ethics, competence, and voice. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>4. Make sure superiors offer feedback and engagement\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t discount the importance of managers providing constant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/4-employee-experience-changes-to-stay-competitive-after-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feedback and engagement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As your company returns to a new normal, feedback on employees\u2019 performances will let them adjust their efforts as needed. It also provides the message that they are valued and that the company wants to see them grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>5. Focus on well-being<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While 48 percent of executives say employees\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.com\/content\/dam\/mercer\/attachments\/private\/global-talent-trends-2020-executive-summary.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-being<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a top concern, only 29% of HR leaders have created a health and well-being strategy. Don\u2019t let this be your company\u2019s story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.com\/content\/dam\/mercer\/attachments\/private\/global-talent-trends-2020-executive-summary.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mercer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, energized employees are four times more likely to report they work in a healthy, flexible, and inclusive workplace. Employees who are energized by their job also say they are more likely to stay and are more resilient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s definitely a time to focus on improving employee well-being, which is a huge positive not only for your employee but also for your organization\u2019s performance.
