You\u2019re probably already aware that work will never look the same again. Here\u2019s another thing that\u2019s going to change. As an increasing number of companies move to allow permanent remote working arrangements, many are adding a new role at the top of their organizational charts: chief remote officer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Facebook, which previously announced plans to make remote work a permanent option for many employees, caught work trend watchers\u2019 eyes recently with a posting for the company\u2019s <\/span>first-ever director of remote work<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The now-expired Facebook job listing says that the move towards more flexible work arrangements as a long-term strategy requires a \u201cthoughtful and measured approach,\u201d with a leader responsible for identifying and implementing the strategies and processes that will best support employees working remotely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Remote work is here to stay<\/b><\/h2>\n

Facebook is far from the only company with plans to add this new role to their corporate structure. The open-source software lab GitLab, whose workforce has already been remote for a decade, hired its first <\/span>head of remote work<\/span><\/a> in 2019. Okta, another tech company that announced a <\/span>move to permanent remote work in 2020<\/span><\/a>, also recently filled a similar position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The long-term move to allow remote work isn\u2019t for tech companies only. While organizations such as Microsoft, Twitter, and Zillow also plan to allow some employees to work from home even once COVID-19 is over, only a meager 5% of companies across sectors expect a <\/span>full return to the office<\/span><\/a> once the pandemic is over. For the vast majority, full-time remote work or flexible, hybrid arrangements involving some work from home will be the new reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These new work models will require new thinking, new ways to promote working together, and new tools and initiatives to help remote workers achieve peak performance\u2014wherever they are.<\/span><\/p>\n

So what will new chief remote work officers do? Ultimately, they\u2019ll be responsible for developing strategies, processes, and tools to support successful remote work, ensuring that the needs of both the organization and remote employees are met.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
