An emergency constitutes anything that could significantly disrupt your business\u2019s process or cash flow.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of a continuity plan is simple: outline the specific, must-do steps to keep your company afloat during a disaster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of your business continuity plan as a sort of \u201cCASE OF EMERGENCY, BREAK GLASS\u201d document. We\u2019re just trying to highlight why continuity plans are worth putting together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a id=\"key\"><\/a><br \/>\nWhat are the key elements of a business continuity plan?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putting together a continuity plan from scratch can be daunting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But most continuity plans follow a relatively similar structure, and the main thing to remember is to focus on the essentials and format your plan in a way that makes sense for your business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before putting pen to paper, make sure you do all of the following to make sure your disaster blueprint is foolproof.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define the purpose of your plan (\u201cWhat will this plan do?\u201d)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, corporations\u2019 continuity plans will have multiple continuity plans for a variety of situations (\u201cIf A happens, we do B. Since you\u2019re likely already strapped for time and resources, this approach also has the benefit of being much less time-consuming. You could also use a template.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even so, the length and scope of your continuity plan should be customizable based on your business. If you\u2019re a bootstrapped startup that pretty much does everything in the cloud, your plan will be much simpler than a company with external servers, an IT team, sensitive customer data, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assess the threats relevant to your business (\u201cWhat risks do we face?\u201d)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, you\u2019ll assess the most pressing threats that face your business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many of the threats discussed earlier are possible, their relevance and likelihood of happening vary from company to company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a distributed team might not have to worry much about natural disasters. Maybe your business is seemingly \u201crecession-proof.\u201d That said, there are likely other \u201cwhat-if\u201d situations that you should know already and prepare for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This speaks to the importance of talking to the rest of your team when it comes time to write your plan. Your colleagues and coworkers might have firsthand insight regarding what it\u2019s like to recover from an emergency. This will help you avoid analysis paralysis and encourages you to start moving during a crisis rather than let things get worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decide on essential roles for carrying out your plan (\u201cWho\u2019s involved?\u201d)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not all of your employees will necessarily be involved with writing your continuity plan, you should define which hands are going to be on deck when a crisis goes down.
