Take James, a 29-year-old software developer who works for a big tech company in Silicon Valley.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s worked there for seven years\u2014right out of college\u2014but when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, he decided to temporarily move back to his parents\u2019 home in Cincinnati. These days, he works out of his old bedroom, still decorated with baseball posters (he uses a virtual background on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/video-call.html\">video calls<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the company announced it was extending its work-from-home policy through summer 2021, James wondered when he\u2019d get back to the office\u2014and what it\u2019ll be like when he does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He knows it won\u2019t be the same. After all, 2020 has been a rollercoaster in just about every way. Remote work is here to stay<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were always questions about whether work-from-home was viable. Would employees be as productive and efficient if somebody didn\u2019t monitor them on-site? Now we know that working from home does work, and it won\u2019t disappear after the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/20\/style\/working-from-home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study found only one in five workers want to return to the office full time. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2020\/10\/01\/twitter-work-from-home\/?arc404=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced its employees can choose to work from home permanently if they\u2019d like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly two-thirds of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myvistage.com\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/10\/October-2020-Vistage-CEO-Confidence-Index.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CEOs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say their remotely working employees will return to the workplace in some form, although that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean full-time. Many employers have plans for employees to return to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/2021_state_of_hybrid_work_report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hybrid work environments<\/a>, a mix of on-site and remote work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>2. Offices will downsize<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that they\u2019ve experienced successful remote work, many companies plan to downsize their physical locations. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-10-06\/companies-to-shrink-offices-as-work-stays-remote-after-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Cisco Systems found that more than half of company executives plan to downsize post-pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/companies-asking-employees-to-work-from-home-due-to-coronavirus-2020#nationwide-insurance-announced-in-may-that-it-plans-to-downsize-from-20-physical-offices-to-just-four-following-the-pandemic-the-majority-of-the-companys-employees-will-continue-to-work-from-home-permanently-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nationwide Insurance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will go from 20 physical offices to just four as most of their employees will continue to work from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>3. More Gen Zers enters the workforce<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen Z, which makes up about a quarter of the workforce now, is the most diverse generation in the US As a group, Gen Zers don\u2019t focus on \u201cclimbing the corporate ladder\u201d but instead tend to care about social issues and making a positive difference with their work. Thirty percent of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.octanner.com\/insights\/white-papers\/5-culture-trends-for-2021.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen Z<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> employees say they\u2019d take a 10 to 20% pay cut to work for a cause they believed in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their focus on community and well-being, rather than loyalty to a company\u2019s brand or reputation, means organizations need to rethink how they attract young employees. In 2021, employers should focus on mentoring and recognizing employees, connecting their company\u2019s work to purpose, and ensuring the company\u2019s attention is on employee health and well-being. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>4, Focus on culture<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies will need to focus on workplace culture after all the pandemic-related changes. Fifty-seven percent of companies surveyed said they anticipate significant changes to their company\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hrexecutive.com\/positive-product-of-the-pandemic-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and they need to think carefully about how they do that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all the layoffs, office closures, and changing work processes, some employees feel less supported. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hrexecutive.com\/digging-into-the-new-corporate-currency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Cuban<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, entrepreneur and Shark Tank star, tells corporations how they respond to the pandemic will define their brand for decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow you treat your employees today will have more impact on your brand in future years than any amount of advertising, any amount of anything you literally could do,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading h2\"><b>5. Workplace communications must support a global workforce<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote work opens up great opportunities to expand the company\u2019s talent base. Successful remote work means new-hires can live anywhere. Work teams will need to operate as a cohesive unit, although their members may live thousands of miles apart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When employees don\u2019t meet in an office, it takes more effort to collaborate, and robust communication systems are essential. Cloud communications, such as team messaging, video conferencing, and phone calls, must fill in the gaps, and they must work well. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/unified-communications.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unified communications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> make the difference between lackluster and successful collaboration across distances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The holidays are right around the corner now, and we\u2019re about to stare 2021 in the eye. Many businesses already know their 2021 plans, while some are still formulating them\u2014or leaving room to discover how conditions look before making any big announcements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless, we know that 2021 will be another year that doesn\u2019t look like any year we\u2019ve seen before.
