Business-as-usual changed all at once, without the benefit of the slow and deliberate planning we\u2019re accustomed to. Those changes happened to keep employees safe while making sure work continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a seismic shift that not even the most forward-looking businesses could\u2019ve anticipated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s also clear is that when the pandemic is under control and we find our \u201cnew normal,\u201d it won\u2019t look like what we had before. Businesses have adapted, employees have changed, and attitudes about working are different. We\u2019ve found new ways to do business successfully, and in many areas, there\u2019ll be no turning back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are four old practices that won\u2019t work anymore post-COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>1. Employees working on-site only<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before COVID, a majority of businesses were uncomfortable with employees working remotely. In fact, 80% of US companies had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/80-of-organizations-did-not-have-a-remote-work-program-before-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no remote work program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employers suffered from inertia\u2014after all, workers always came into the office to work. Without ever trying remote work, most leaders lacked the imagination to understand the potential of working from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They worried that employees working away from the office wouldn\u2019t be as productive. They claimed many jobs were \u201cimpossible to do remotely.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then COVID-19 came around, however, and jobs that were previously \u201cimpossible to do remotely\u201d suddenly found their remote wings. What\u2019s more, they achieved good results too. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-19-lockdown-work-from-home-day-one-hour-longer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Harvard Business School and New York University found that people who work remotely spend 48.5 more minutes per day than they did pre-virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other surveys found that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/en\/library\/covid-19\/us-remote-work-survey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">44% of executives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> today feel employees have become more productive working remotely<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/McKinsey\/Business%20Functions\/Organization\/Our%20Insights\/Reimagining%20the%20office%20and%20work%20life%20after%20COVID%2019\/Reimagining-the-office-and-work-life-after-COVID-19-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41% of employees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feel the same way<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/McKinsey\/Business%20Functions\/Organization\/Our%20Insights\/Reimagining%20the%20office%20and%20work%20life%20after%20COVID%2019\/Reimagining-the-office-and-work-life-after-COVID-19-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80% of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enjoy working from home<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many jobs require employees to work on-site, many others can support a remote workforce. Organizations will still need those work-from-home employees post-COVID-19, and they will need to continue supporting remote work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>2. Micromanaging as a management style<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With many employees working remotely, management styles need to adjust. Monitoring employees that work in another location requires shifting your methods and expectations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t just assume an employee is working based on how much time they spend at their desk. Even when you\u2019re at the same location and can see an employee sitting across the room, you don\u2019t know how productive they\u2019re being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluate their performance, instead, based on the outcome. How is their work? Are they meeting their goals? What\u2019s the quality of their work?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>3. Using too many collaboration apps<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to see how it happened. COVID-19 struck and companies quickly sent their employees home to safety. They hurriedly adopted remote work solutions for messaging, video, and calling\u2014all the tools they needed to keep communication open so that work would get done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in rushing to choose new solutions, many ended up with multiple overlapping apps. Having two or more apps that provide video calling, for instance, is not sustainable long term. App overload causes employee fatigue and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/netstorage.ringcentral.com\/documents\/connected_workplace.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wastes a significant amount of time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seventy percent of workers say having disparate work apps makes it challenging to get their work done. More than two-thirds report wasting up to an hour of work time per day just navigating between various apps. Sixty-eight percent of workers find themselves toggling between different apps up to 10 times in a single hour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too many apps can also mean running the risk of employees switching to other unauthorized tools that can pose a security risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because your employees will only utilize technology that\u2019s easy to use, it\u2019s more efficient to provide them with one platform they understand well and are comfortable with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not surprising that 66% of workers say they\u2019d prefer to use one platform that integrates all the communications they need in a day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>4. Keeping employees in the dark<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that your employees always appreciate transparency, especially during uncertain times. They want to understand what\u2019s going on with the business, management expectations, and their position. They want to be confident that the strong company culture they know and love isn\u2019t changing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re no longer in the office to hear news around the water cooler, chat casually with the boss, or celebrate wins in real time. But these are still valid communications needs, and employers must make sure they still happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communication and transparency are critical\u2014even more so now with COVID-19. They\u2019ll need that after the pandemic, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>Post-COVID tools to support remote work<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we shift into the post-pandemic period, businesses will face a new work-life paradigm that looks nothing like before. From remote and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/2021_state_of_hybrid_work_report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hybrid work<\/a> arrangements to new forms of communication, leaders will need to rethink those obsolete practices to stay competitive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having the right tools to support remote work will be one of the key differentiators.
