For one, many offices became empty shells as employees took their computers home and started work remotely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many companies find remote work is going well. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/06\/tech\/facebook-work-from-home\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/27\/tech\/google-work-from-home-extension\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both stated that 95% of their employees will work from home until at least July 2021. With the hashtag #LoveWhereverYouWork, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/company\/2020\/keeping-our-employees-and-partners-safe-during-coronavirus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced its employees can permanently work from home if they choose. Remote work started looking like the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But let\u2019s face it, most organizations aren\u2019t Twitter, Facebook, or Google. Most don\u2019t have the business model and technology for their employees to work from home 100% of the time. In fact, only about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bfi.uchicago.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/BFI_White-Paper_Dingel_Neiman_3.2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of jobs in the US can be performed remotely. That means about 63% of jobs require some sort of on-site presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>Collaboration in the new workplace<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post-COVID-19 reality: some businesses will have fully remote workforces while many more will have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020-07-14-gartner-survey-reveals-82-percent-of-company-leaders-plan-to-allow-employees-to-work-remotely-some-of-the-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hybrid ones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 where workers split their time between working remotely and at the office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020-07-14-gartner-survey-reveals-82-percent-of-company-leaders-plan-to-allow-employees-to-work-remotely-some-of-the-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gartner study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that post-COVID, 82% of company leaders will allow employees to work remotely at least part of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering that many of your organization\u2019s teams might move to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/2021_state_of_hybrid_work_report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hybrid work model<\/a>, how can you ensure that they remain collaborative when employees are always on the move?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Rethink your management style<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading in a virtual environment requires agile, thoughtful management. Rather than commanding employees to do their best, enable them to do so. One way is to build some flexibility into the system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some employees, work conditions at home are less than ideal these days. Many parents have young children at home, and there are other difficult circumstances that are nobody\u2019s fault, too. Consider offering staggered shifts, rotating days off, or other flexible arrangements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Focus on the result, not the process<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying to micromanage people while they work from home doesn\u2019t go well. Management isn\u2019t about measuring your employees\u2019 time-in-seat, but rather their results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have short planning meetings with your team, so it\u2019s clear what needs to happen, trust they know what they\u2019re doing, and then step back and let them do it. Focus on the outcome, not the process.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Continue to recognize accomplishments<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put some effort into helping people feel connected to each other and your company\u2019s culture. Recognizing good employees is one way to do that. It\u2019s easy, free, and more valuable than you might realize.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbescoachescouncil\/2017\/12\/13\/promoting-employee-happiness-benefits-everyone\/#2151278e581a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that happy employees are up to 20% more productive and that happy salespeople make 37% more sales.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoting your employees\u2019 happiness can pay off in other ways, too. From 1998 to 2016, the stock prices of companies in Fortune\u2019s \u201c100 Best Companies to Work For\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/02\/27\/the-best-companies-to-work-for-are-beating-the-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outperformed the market by 5%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> year over year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognition doesn\u2019t need to be monetary. You can acknowledge high-performing employees (and motivate others) with public acknowledgment, opportunities for development, and other low-cost perks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Help employees prevent burnout<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people work more hours at home because it\u2019s harder to separate from the workplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Management can set the tone and expectation about switching off at the end of the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let employees know they can put their phone on \u201cdo not disturb\u201d mode when they\u2019re off the clock and that they don\u2019t need to check emails on weekends. Encourage them to set work limits and get a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5. Use technology that facilitates collaboration\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do organizations ensure communication and collaboration when their teams can be anywhere?
