But what\u2019s next?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The year 2020 is poised to be one of the most transformational periods in healthcare ever.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost overnight, COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdowns disrupted decades of healthcare delivery protocols as well as patients\u2019 needs and expectations, shifting previously in-person services onto the internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While COVID-19 turned healthcare upside down, there\u2019s one silver lining to this crisis. Thanks to new technologies, lockdowns, and temporary waivers on Medicare limitations, <\/span><b>telehealth usage has skyrocketed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to data from McKinsey, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/McKinsey\/Industries\/Healthcare%20Systems%20and%20Services\/Our%20Insights\/Telehealth%20A%20quarter%20trillion%20dollar%20post%20COVID%2019%20reality\/Telehealth-A-quarter-trilliondollar-post-COVID-19-reality.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rate of U.S. consumers using telehealth services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has more than quadrupled during the pandemic, surging from 11% in 2019 to 46%. Healthcare providers are seeing as many as 175 times the number of patients virtually as they did before COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>How telehealth is redefining care delivery<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RingCentral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RingCentral<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-hosted Twitter chat\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RCChat?src=hashtag_click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#RCChat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014B2B influencer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EvanKirstel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evan Kirstel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and seasoned healthcare professional <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lance_mehaffey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lance Mehaffey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discussed the future of telehealth, including how web chat technology, cloud communications, and telehealth go together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rapid rate of adoption this year is impressive. Virtual care experiences provide a great opportunity to examine the potential of telehealth as a formidable healthcare delivery model in the future\u2014helping to identify what works and what doesn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNearly 90% of patients felt their telehealth visit was as good or better than an in-office visit,\u201d Mehaffey told Twitter chat participants.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a perception that<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/virtualcare?src=hashtag_click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#virtualcare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 2nd best, when in reality, the continuous, proactive care we provide is more than just a stopgap during\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID?src=hashtag_click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#COVID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d noted\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CareByFirefly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@CareByFirefly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a telehealth provider based in Boston. \u201cVirtual-first primary care gives the ability to quickly get in contact with a care team and formulate the most effective plan.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They went on to tweet: \u201cOur patients have expressed time and again how impressed they have been with the ability to continue conversations with their care team. Follow-ups after appointments or referrals give patients consistent and proactive care, and they love that!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building on these positive experiences, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EvanKirstel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@EvanKirtsel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> predicts the double-punch of accessibility to telehealth services and internet-enabled monitoring devices\u2014such as insulin pumps\u2014will help to reduce demands on the healthcare system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that six in 10 U.S. adults have a chronic condition (and four in 10 have two or more chronic diseases), the potential of telehealth to improve the speed and access to care could prove to be a game changer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>Improving the pain of telehealth<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But despite positive assessments of telehealth experiences during the pandemic, the virtual delivery of healthcare services has not been entirely pain-free for providers. Moving forward, a failure to reduce the key challenges medical providers have experienced may dampen the future potential of telehealth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWorkflow seems to be a challenge in many physician practices,\u201d tweeted Kirstel. \u201cAdmin staff [are] somewhat overwhelmed by all the new tech.\u201d Concerns include not only providing reliable, secure, and simple connectivity with patients, but also administrative challenges such as scheduling and integrating patient EMRs.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These reported drawbacks underscore the need to employ the right telehealth technology. \u201cHigh-quality voice, video, and messaging are fundamental to telehealth success!\u201d says Kirstel. Layering CCaaS (Contact Center as a Service) atop of a cloud-based unified video, voice, and messaging platform can further support the broader patient experience, enhancing aspects such as scheduling and delivery of care.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading h3\"><b>The future is telehealth<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Accenture,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HfOAZgtRK6?amp=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 60% of patients want to continue using telehealth services after the public health crisis ends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, McKinsey reports that healthcare providers have a more positive view and are more comfortable using telehealth than they were before the pandemic.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that both patients and providers have favorable assessments, it seems evident that telehealth is a delivery model for the future.
