And as some shifted to cost-containment, corporate culture suddenly became at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That begs the question: as hordes of unemployed, skilled talent seek jobs, and companies focus on cutting costs, does company culture still matter? After all, job seekers and employees have little negotiating power now. It\u2019s a \u201ctake it or leave it\u201d job market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Importance of culture amid times of uncertainty<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The economy will slowly recover, and when it does, people will remember how companies treated their workforce and acted in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. In other words, organizations will be judged by their corporate culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A company\u2019s culture reflects its core values, management practices, and its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/talentorganizationblog.accenture.com\/financialservices\/can-your-culture-support-your-people-in-covid-19-isolation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workplace environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as how an organization manages employee work-life balance and performance &#8212; and in the case of the pandemic, how managers and employees adapt to working from home full-time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the five reasons why having a strong, healthy work culture is more important than ever:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Employee engagement<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/07\/workers-quit-their-jobs-at-the-fastest-rate-on-record-in-2019.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.5 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Americans quit their jobs every month. The reasons people leave their jobs include low pay, low morale, bad communication and bad managers. In fact, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dynamicsignal.com\/2019\/03\/20\/2019-employee-communication-and-engagement-study\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that nearly two-thirds of workers have considered quitting their jobs because of poor workplace communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When an organization cultivates a culture of transparency and strong communication, employees feel a stronger sense of belonging, which results in higher engagement, according <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/marcel-schwantes\/why-do-people-quit-their-jobs-exactly-it-comes-down-to-3-reasons-according-to-research.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inc. magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another recent study from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.udemy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/FINAL-Udemy_2018_Employee_Experience_Report_20180918_B.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Udemy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 51% of Millennials and Gen Z\u2019ers and 43% of older employees quit their jobs because of bad managers, and 60% felt their managers lacked proper managerial training. They want managers that help them develop their careers and motivate their teams, foster collaboration and handle interpersonal issues, all of which are soft skills that can improve employee engagement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The upshot: employees are much more engaged and happier with a better culture. A Gallup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/236483\/enhances-benefits-employee-engagement.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that engaged employees are 59% less likely to job hunt in the next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Performance and productivity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highly engaged employees are loyal, self-motivated, are supportive of coworkers and have a strong work ethic and are committed to quality, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rodgerdeanduncan\/2020\/02\/18\/what-engagement-or-lack-of-it-means-for-your-organization\/#4f8d114f598e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forbes.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, engaged workers are more productive, innovative, and successful. In fact, a Gallup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/236366\/right-culture-not-employee-satisfaction.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that highly engaged business units are 17% more productive and 21% more profitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Talent attraction and retention<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When COVID-19 struck, graphics processor giant NVIDIA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/csr\/our-response-to-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moved up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its annual performance reviews by nearly six months, allowing employees to receive raises earlier and help cope with the sudden changes of the lockdowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other businesses increased communication, provided more flexible work hours, added benefits such as additional pay or more vacation time, to help their employees cope with the coronavirus crisis, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hrexecutive.com\/positive-product-of-the-pandemic-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Resource Executive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actions like these not only improve a company\u2019s reputation, but keeps employees engaged and excited to work there. And retention is important, especially as businesses recover. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/236294\/millennials-job-hoppers-not.aspx?g_source=link_NEWSV9&amp;g_medium=TOPIC&amp;g_campaign=item_&amp;g_content=Many%2520Millennials%2520Are%2520Job-Hoppers%2520--%2520But%2520Not%2520All\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Gallup found that the cost of replacing an employee can cost 150% of his or her annual salary. With businesses cutting costs, turnover is an unnecessary, costly expense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Brand reputation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Company culture can reflect directly on brand reputation for years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, when Best Western\u2019s UK hotels saw high rates of cancellations in early March because of the virus, the hotel chain repurposed 15,000 rooms across the country to house medical personnel, low-risk patients and at-risk individuals, which kept some of its hotel employees employed, according to an online <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bain.com\/insights\/covid-19-creates-a-moment-of-truth-for-corporate-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by management consulting firm Bain &amp; Company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chain was guided by two of its central cultural values: service excellence and being a good community member, the post said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such a move improves a brand\u2019s image, which long-term can help boost revenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The greater community will look at your company in a positive way. Bain &amp; Company\u2019s research shows that companies that exhibit a good corporate culture by inspiring employees and showing a strong internal compass are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bain.com\/insights\/covid-19-creates-a-moment-of-truth-for-corporate-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.7 times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more likely to be business performance leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5. Show of confidence<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In times like these, it\u2019s not surprising that employees might be on edge. They\u2019re working in unfamiliar environments, adapting to new technologies, and don\u2019t know if they\u2019re next on the chopping block.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A strong company culture, however, can be the fuel for solidarity. For example, companies that continue celebrating wins, practice transparency toward employees, and reinforce what makes them excellent places to work can instill trust and morale.
