Treat it as an in-person visit<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April 2020, Forrester Research predicted there would be\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/2020\/06\/how-to-create-a-patient-focused-telehealth-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over one billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> telehealth interactions by the end of the year. Those interactions can be either negative or positive. One of the ways healthcare providers can make telehealth interactions positive is by treating them as an in-person visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means reviewing the patient\u2019s chart before the call or video chat. During the call or video chat, don\u2019t get distracted. If you\u2019re using video, look at the camera, so it\u2019s as though you\u2019re looking at the patient. Hold the telehealth visit someplace quiet, so that it\u2019s easy for the patient to hear you, and dress as you would for an office visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. Look and listen attentively<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s significantly easier to pick up on symptoms when a patient is in the same room as you; however, using video chat or even a phone call can still give you vital insights into how a patient is doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the June 2020 issue of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infectioncontroltoday.com\/view\/telehealth-time-covid-19-20-year-overnight-success\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection Control Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a patient recounted in an interview that her immunocompromised status meant she had to cancel all of her in-person appointments. Her rheumatologist suggested they try a telehealth visit. During the visit, he noticed a symptom through a physical examination of her hands. One of the most crucial telehealth tips for a positive experience is to make sure that patients feel comfortable with telehealth visits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand how the patient journey has now dramatically changed\u2014instead of traveling to an appointment and sitting in a waiting room, patients might now hold a video conference with their provider as they take a break from working from home or caring for their children. Getting a sense of a patient\u2019s current situation helps providers better engage with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>8. Be aware of changing healthcare trends<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to the public health crisis, telehealth wasn\u2019t that prevalent. Now that telehealth is becoming an option, many patients want to continue using it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/_acnmedia\/pdf-94\/accenture-2019-digital-health-consumer-survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 survey from Accenture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, more patients expect their providers to have digital capabilities:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sixty-nine percent want to communicate with their providers through secure email<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seventy percent want to receive reminders when it\u2019s time for their next appointment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forty-nine percent want to communicate with their provider through video chat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients like telehealth because it\u2019s convenient.
