For many people, it\u2019s little more than a tasty breakfast. But for Jason Uslan, it\u2019s a way of life.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTypically, I don\u2019t bother with the syrup or the cherry, I usually just pour the bourbon into a glass and call that an Old Fashioned<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s a unique combination of gastronome, showman, and raconteur. Stood at his kitchen island, sporting a leather Sweeney Todd apron and a steel bowl of chicken wings, Jason Uslan is a celebrity chef for a new era.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing with 4th July food is, the day\u2019s really meant for being with people, it\u2019s not meant for making big, extravagant meals. It\u2019s simple food, cooked outside, you can eat with a beer, spend time with friends, and converse. We don\u2019t take the food so seriously; we do<\/em> take the celebrating seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

While guiding his audience through simple recipes designed for busy homes, Uslan dispenses lifestyle advice, answers questions from his audience, and tells anecdotes from the world of people management.<\/p>\n

Humble beginnings<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a dramatic transition from Uslan\u2019s \u2018day job\u2019 as RingCentral UK\u2019s senior manager of mid-market sales. In some ways, it doesn\u2019t make sense.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know what you\u2019re thinking,\u201d says Uslan. \u201cI\u2019ve been in sales and management all my life. I\u2019ve done well in that space, and I don\u2019t regret a minute of it.\u201d So what gives?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I go home and take off the tie, I walk straight into the kitchen and slip on the apron. It\u2019s my passion, and that\u2019s never going to change.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the world went home to escape coronavirus, it marked a change for Uslan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t coming home anymore: I was always home. And the kitchen kept calling.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the same time, another Jason was on the lookout for ways to enhance RingCentral UK\u2019s employee experience.<\/p>\n

Employee engagement genius Jason Lane was building a strategy to keep remote colleagues connected and offer them a break from the intensity of the working day.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was kind of an organic process,\u201d says Lane. \u201cWe just sort of…found each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two agreed to trial a midweek online cooking class for RingCentral UK employees. For an hour at lunchtime, Uslan would take viewers through a recipe from his family collection. The reception was astounding.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had people dialing in from places I\u2019d never even heard of,\u201d says Uslan. \u201cTo be honest with you, the pasta didn\u2019t quite turn out how I liked \u2013 but that didn\u2019t even matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was the experiential distraction that captured his audience\u2019s imagination.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom my side, I was delighted to be sharing my passion with people,\u201d Uslan reflects. \u201cBut of course, it wasn\u2019t until the pizza episode that things really<\/em> took off.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pizza episode<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI guess it had all the right ingredients,\u201d he says, looking back on the moment that led Uslan to become a household name virtually overnight.<\/p>\n

The pizza episode saw Uslan returning to an old family favourite. The recipe was a big hit. Uslan had found a winning formula.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely not just about the recipes,\u201d says Lane. \u201cIt\u2019s the rapport, the way he engages with the audience, the whole package.\u201d<\/p>\n

What happened next varies depending on who you\u2019re speaking to. But here\u2019s what it boils down to: Someone shared the pizza video on social, the clip went viral, Uslan\u2019s fan base began its exponential growth, and a brand was born.<\/p>\n

Fast forward three weeks and Uslan is one of West London\u2019s most popular pizza artisans. Uslan Pizza \u2013 the food, the YouTube channel, and the signature apron \u2013 is fast becoming a post-pandemic emergent lifestyle.<\/p>\n

And the rumours of a book deal?<\/p>\n

\u201cThat could be the next chapter,\u201d nods Uslan. \u201cI\u2019m not sure how much I can say, but I\u2019m working on some new recipes right now. We\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

A new way to approach work<\/strong><\/p>\n

So did the initiative achieve its objective?<\/p>\n

\u201cIn more ways than we could have hoped for,\u201d says Lane. \u201cNow we\u2019re getting requests for shoutouts, specific dishes, special appearances, all kinds of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

From an initial base of loyal viewers, Uslan\u2019s cooking show has become a media behemoth and just keeps growing.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur employees love that break from the working day, that chance to connect and share an experience with their colleagues,\u201d says Lane. \u201cIn terms of productivity, we\u2019re hitting new records with each passing quarter. And we all love to see one of our own do well. We couldn\u2019t be happier for Jason.\u201d<\/p>\n

With companies around the world trialing their own remote engagement sessions, it looks like this practice is shaping the way we conduct business with an industry-agnostic appeal. \u201cI don\u2019t want to say I was the first or anything,\u201d says Lane, \u201cbut I like to think I helped bring this approach to employee wellbeing into the mainstream.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s playing it down. Lane, an accomplished theatre director and choreographer, knows the value of connecting with people \u2013 whether that\u2019s on the stage, in the office, or over a video call<\/a>. Now, in his role as an internal engagement manager, Lane helps create stars from the RingCentral talent pool.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could say I was in the right place at the right time,\u201d adds Uslan. \u201cI\u2019m forever grateful to Jason for the opportunity and the platform he gave me, and I\u2019m committed to putting all this love back into my cooking.\u201d<\/p>\n
