Due to such concerns during the COVID-19 crisis, there was a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthleadersmedia.com\/clinical-care\/telehealth-expansion-during-coronavirus-pandemic-changing-physician-patient\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 percent increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the use of telehealth services in March 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previously, there had been a debate within the medical community about the impact of telehealth services on doctor-patient relationships, with some providers arguing that the lack of in-person visits would hurt the connection between patients and clinicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that concern proved to be unjustified. In a study published in June 2020, researchers revealed that after analyzing over 4,500 patient comments on telehealth visits,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mcpiqojournal.org\/article\/S2542-4548(20)30075-8\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 30 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of those comments expressed that the doctor built a rapport with the patient during a telehealth visit. The third-most frequent comment was that the doctor focused on user experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Making healthcare more convenient<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTraditional healthcare\u201d and \u201cconvenience\u201d don\u2019t tend to go in the same sentence together. In<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/_acnmedia\/pdf-94\/accenture-2019-digital-health-consumer-survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accenture\u2019s 2019 Digital Health Consumer Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 21 percent of Millennials, 18 percent of Gen Z, and 57 percent of Baby Boomers were disappointed by the inconvenience of appointment times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telehealth services improve patient experience by making healthcare more convenient. Instead of having to take time off work (and potentially travel long distances), patients attend a doctor\u2019s visit from the comfort of their own home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-43318 size-full\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/patient-experience-telehealth2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"930\" height=\"479\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Increasing efficiency<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one wants to waste time. From the patient perspective, time is valuable. One of the benefits of telehealth services is that it increases efficiency. In a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avizia.com\/2017-closing-telehealth-gap-research-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 59 percent of patients who used telehealth services said they saved time, while another 55 percent reported faster service and shorter wait times to see a doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With telehealth services, patients don\u2019t waste time waiting for appointments (either waiting to book them or sitting in the waiting room). They don\u2019t spend time traveling when they don\u2019t need to do so. Instead, they can have an excellent patient experience at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. Empowering patients with self-help options<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/digital-healthcare-and-patient-experience-what-consumers-want\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accenture study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mentioned earlier, patients also expressed their disappointment with the lack of responsiveness to questions outside of appointments. Almost three-quarters of Millennials, 18 percent of Gen Zs, and 63 percent of older patients want their healthcare providers to answer questions without having to book an appointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telehealth can enhance the patient experience by providing self-help options. One way to do that is through a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/patient-access-centers-elevate-the-patient-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patient access center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A patient access center is a <a class=\"waffle-rich-text-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/contact-center.html\">contact center<\/a> that utilizes a healthcare communications platform (which includes technologies such as video conferencing, telephony, and chat). With a patient access center, a patient could contact his or her provider outside of an appointment to ask questions. Delivering telehealth services this way enables the patient to get the help they need so they use healthcare resources efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. Increasing access to underserved populations<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a particular segment of patients for whom telehealth services would greatly improve patient experience: those who live in underserved areas, especially rural areas. They have less access to healthcare providers as well as to insurance. As a result, healthcare is more expensive and difficult to obtain; a 2016 survey showed that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aspe.hhs.gov\/system\/files\/pdf\/204986\/ACARuralbrief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over a quarter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of uninsured rural residents put off healthcare that year due to lack of access and high costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telehealth services allow rural patients to access medical care in a way that\u2019s convenient. They don\u2019t have to take time off work to travel to appointments (which\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthtechmagazine.net\/article\/2017\/03\/telemedicine-proving-its-roi-rural-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">costs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an average of $16,769 and $24,000, respectively). Moreover,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/7-telehealth-challenges-for-healthcare-organizations-and-how-to-overcome-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regulatory changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have encouraged the use of telehealth services, making it more affordable for rural patients to connect with doctors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>6. Better access to specialists<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telehealth services also boost patient experience by increasing access to specialists.<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralhealthinfo.org\/toolkits\/telehealth\/2\/care-delivery\/specialty-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access to specialists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is restricted based on physician referral, geographic location, and insurance. There are also fewer specialists in relation to primary care physicians and, for rural patients, the challenge to access specialists is greater because specialists are mostly located in urban areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With telehealth services, specialists can see more patients.
