Interviewing has gone virtual, virtually overnight. Here\u2019s five tips you need to know now.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Nearly<\/span> 9 out of 10 employers in the U.S.<\/span><\/a>, including Amazon, LinkedIn and Facebook, have\u00a0 shifted to 100% virtual interviews due to the global pandemic. That\u2019s an entirely new set of hurdles for applicants to overcome; and it means everything from bandwidth to backgrounds, and even overstimulated toddlers have to be accounted for. Here are five tips to help you turn your next virtual interview into an actual job:<\/span><\/p>\n

Be comfortable with your technology.<\/b> Shut down unnecessary applications and set yourself up in a clean, quiet space with the best wifi connection possible. Interviewers <\/span>are<\/span><\/i> sympathetic to technical difficulties\u2026but they have their limits. If you seem overwhelmed by technology, you\u2019re not putting out the \u201cI can deal with adversity\u201d-vibes employers often look for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Be camera-ready.<\/b> \u00a0Eye-contact is as important in a virtual meeting as it is in-person, so be sure you\u2019re looking directly into the lens. Position your webcam a little higher than your head, if at all possible, and look straight into your camera to effectively mimic eye contact. Try moving the window containing the interviewer\u2019s video as close to your webcam as possible, so you\u2019ll appear to be watching them speak, not staring off into the distance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Vice President of Employee Success and Talent Acquisition Alvin Lam, the biggest keys to a virtual interview are ultimately very similar to what they would be in-person.<\/span><\/p>\n

Be prepared.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Obviously, you\u2019ll want to prepare by learning as much as you can about what the company does and what your interviewer\u2019s role is. But preparation doesn\u2019t end there. \u201cCome in with a discussion framework in mind,\u201d says Lam. You\u2019ve already got an agenda: Why I\u2019m Right For This Job. You should be able to make a focused, concise case for that outcome\u2014\u00a0 \u201c\u2026and have specific examples of your experiences that are relevant to the job you want.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Be relevant – and 100% authentic.<\/b><\/p>\n

You might have an entertaining, authentic story about the summer you spent as a river rafting guide. But if that experience isn\u2019t truly relevant to the software engineering job you\u2019re going for, you\u2019re better off saving it for later. \u201cIt\u2019s important to tie in your experiences to the job you\u2019re applying for,\u201d says Lam, \u201cand definitely be 100% authentic about what you are truly responsible for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Be concise.<\/b><\/p>\n

It\u2019s tempting to use 100 words where five will do. Don\u2019t. If you\u2019re being transparent about your goals, your skills and your experience, you\u2019ll check off the proverbial \u201cboxes\u201d that company is looking for – and reduce the likelihood of a technical snafu. Lam suggests \u201cLet your experience do the talking.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
