Students can complete modules, take quizzes and tests, submit assignments, and listen to lectures and peer presentations\u2014all online. Magic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E-learning can be divided into <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two models<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 20px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Synchronous e-learning\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Classes happen at the same time, for everyone. Synchronous learning is the model that\u2019s most similar to traditional classroom learning. You log in to whatever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/small-business\/blog\/the-best-video-conferencing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video conferencing software<\/a> you\u2019re using, watch lectures and presentations, and have conversations in real time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synchronous e-learning is great for students (and teachers) who are just starting to transition to online platforms since it replicates a classroom so closely. It also helps students (and teachers!) stay accountable and on track, since everyone shows up at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, real-time communication with everyone and seeing each other\u2019s faces\u2014even if it\u2019s through a screen\u2014can help students and teachers feel more connected and engaged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, synchronous learning does have some drawbacks. You absolutely need the right software. Laggy video chat platforms will cause massive delays, not to mention headaches\u2014and embarrassment when the teacher or professor is trying their best to get everything sorted out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synchronous learning is also not very flexible. Teachers and students have to commit to being online, on the same platform, at the same time. If you have other obligations\u2014work, kids, household duties, etc.\u2014those will have to be put on hold while you\u2019re in class. Everyone\u2019s schedule has to line up at the same time, and that can be difficult to achieve.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 20px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Asynchronous e-learning<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, in asynchronous e-learning, classes and learning activities happen at different times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical online discussion board is a good example of asynchronous learning. Students can listen to pre-recorded material, work through modules, and contribute to discussions at their own pace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main benefits of asynchronous e-learning is that it\u2019s super flexible. A student can\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work on their course at whatever time is best for them, whether it\u2019s during normal school hours or at midnight during breaks while playing Fortnight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is especially great for students who have different needs\u2014they can take their own time working through the course, instead of moving along at the exact same pace with everyone else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, students can download content ahead of time, which means they don\u2019t need to be online to listen to their lectures or do readings. With synchronous e-learning, you have to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have a solid Internet connection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"The current state of e-learning\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 20px;\"><strong>So, where are we at with e-learning?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like remote working, e-learning is becoming pretty popular. Take a quick look at some of these stats:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/techjury.net\/stats-about\/elearning\/#gref\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forty-nine percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of post secondary students worldwide have taken an online course in the last year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-e-learning-way-of-the-future-or-an-ineffective-teaching-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">58,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> high school students in Ontario, Canada, took an online course between 2017 and 2019. Enrollment has increased by about 17% a year since 2011.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/elearningindustry.com\/top-elearning-statistics-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forty-three percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of college students in the US say that e-learning is \u201cextremely helpful\u201d and can reduce drop-out rates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E-learning can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elearningindustry.com\/top-elearning-statistics-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> energy consumption by 90% and carbon emissions by more than 85%.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More and more public education systems are allowing students to opt out of regular classes and do e-learning instead\u2014some school boards even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/peopleforeducation.ca\/our-work\/ontario-e-learning-plan-unique-in-north-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">require<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> e-learning to graduate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although to be fair, there are some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6544647\/ontario-parents-students-e-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticisms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of e-learning, it\u2019s quickly becoming an important part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tjmccue\/2018\/07\/31\/e-learning-climbing-to-325-billion-by-2025-uf-canvas-absorb-schoology-moodle\/#1667ed893b39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"Where technology like video meetings can take us\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 20px;\"><strong>How can you use technology to create a great e-learning experience?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at some ways that technology can improve e-learning, which improves the lives of teachers and students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #434343; padding-top: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Video conferencing lets students attend class\u2014from anywhere.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As great as asynchronous e-learning is, it\u2019s unlikely that we\u2019ll be able to get to 100% asynchronous e-learning anytime soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of today, there are still not many ways to learn that are better than being in a class with the teacher and other students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But video conferencing adds a layer of convenience to this style of e-learning. Working on online platforms means that students can learn how to use and figure out technology on their own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like learning a language, the best way to become fluent in tech is by regularly using technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being up to date on technology\u2014and confident in how well they can speak \u201ctech\u201d\u2014means that students can gain a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/deloi.tt\/2JhFO9u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">competitive edge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when they start looking for jobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is especially helpful if they end up entering the fast-growing field of remote work\u2014with e-learning, they\u2019re already well-equipped to make that transition from online learning to online working.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers can also get more comfortable and adept with technology through online learning. Some teachers might be new to using technology and intimidated by e-learning if they\u2019re not familiar with the platforms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the only way to get good at something is to actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To build tech fluency through e-learning tools, it helps to choose something that&#8217;s intuitive and easy to set up and get started with.
